  • The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 31

Episode 31 of The Story of rock and Roll was recorded in the Mix 93.8 FM studios in Midrand at midnight on 9 August 2019.  It was a joyous celebration of Women's Day and the fact that it's a long weekend.  It was also the first episode recorded in the revamped Studio A with a brand new desk.  What a pleasure.  It also marked a change in the recording process for the podcast.  My Apple Mac Book Pro died and has been replaced with a Dell / Microsoft system.  Again, what a pleasure.

The highlight of the show, certainly according to the Whatsapp line was Richard Pryor's Brand New Day, an instrumental blues monsterpiece.  I was also kaked out for mispronouncing Patlansky, thanks Paul, noted :-) It's good to have people who care enough to point these things out.  The weirdest / odd man out track was without a doubt Robert Palmers Clues which was a real jolt of nostalgia.  Machine Head were sent in to restore normality.  All  in all it was an eclectic mix of Rock, Metal, Ballads and Blues, a two hour education in high voltage rock and roll, and as mentioned, it was also Women's Day and the release day for the brand Slipknot album.  Ain't Life Grand \m/

Artists featured this week include:  Metallica, The Pretty Reckless, Pebbleman, The Four Horsemen, Machine Head, Def Leppard, Rainbow, Chickenfoot, Live, Thin Lizzy, Bruce Springsteen, Skid Row, Headpins, Arch Enemy, Paul Stanley, Joe Walsh, Fokofpolisiekar, Halestorm, Slade, W.A.S.P., Rammstein, Skid Row, ACDC, Robert Palmer & Tom Petty

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 30

Episode 30 of TSORR Radio Show went out live at midnight on 2 Aug 2019.  Everything went smoothly and it was a well balanced mix of rock, metal, ballads and blues as it is supposed to be.  We got as heavy as Hell Yeah and Mark Morton and as mellow as Bob Dylan and a Def Leppard ballad.  For me personally one of the highlights was hearing Chester Bennington guesting on the new Mark Morton album.  I played a bit of Keel and the Whats App line lit up like a beacon at the mention of Rafe Levine’s Rock and Horror Show, many people have fond memories of that show back in the 80’s.  The SA corner was represented by Sugar Drive and Johnathan Martin.  All in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable show.

Artists featured included Skid Row, Dio, Keel, Thin Lizzy, David Bowie, Soundgarden, Deep Purple, Airbourne, Queensrÿche, David Lee Roth, Sugar Drive, Marilyn Manson, Def Leppard, The Screaming Jets, Jackson Browne, Mark Morton, Volbeat, Desolation Angels, System of a Down, Pink Floyd, The Clash, Black Label Society, Johnathan Martin, We Are Harlot and Hell Yeah.  Hope you enjoy it, until next week; cheers!

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 29

In the words of a listener, Episode 29 was “really cool, good energy”.  I have to agree wholeheartedly.  The show was recorded at midnight on 26 July 2019.  It was probably one of the first shows to wish Mick Jagger a very happy 76th birthday.  We played ‘Bitch’ to celebrate, taken from the Live in Atlantic City album.  The show kicked off with Metallica and we didn’t stop rocking for  the next two hours.  There was a wonderful part where we went from Slayer to Dylan and it was like someone had poured cool water over the entire world.  It felt like the whole planet was on fire and then Bob came and soothed our souls.  Another great part was listening to Put That Record On by Hinder where Austin Winkler sings “I know it’s only rock and roll but it’s the soundtrack of our lives”.  Those words sum up the whole ethos of the Story of Rock and Roll, this music is important, we love it and it is indeed the soundtrack to our lives.

Artists featured on Episode 29 included Metallica, Skid Row, Jack Hammer, Bush, Judas Priest, Halestorm, The Police, Mustasch, Rush, Sammy Hagar, Aerosmith, Jerry Cantrell, The Rolling Stones, Matthew Good Band, Slayer, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Kiss, Tesla, The Uninvited, Madness, Austin Gold, Cold Chisel Avenged Sevenfold, Windowpane and Hinder.  As usual I was out of time and I played out with an amazing new track by The Wildhearts called Let ‘Em Go , which cut off due to podcast length restrictions so I’ll be playing that again soon.

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 28

Episode 28 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show aired at midnight on 19 Jul 2019.  The show was jam packed with the type of rock you have come to expect from TSORR.  No technical hitches so it was a downhill run all the way from midnight through until 2am.  Due to the sad passing of South African icon Johnny Clegg there was a short little tribute to him and a few words about how special he was.  RIP Johnny, there is a nice little piece about Johnny Clegg as well as a few video clips on www.thestoryofrockandroll.com in the blog section, check it out if you are a fan.

The WhatsApp line to the studio was really alive and a good few tracks played on this particular show were requests.  TSORR always gets solid support from Australia but we can now add the Philippines into that category.  Artists included in this weeks show included Queensryche, Cold Chisel, Great White, Marilyn Manson, Saxon, Neil Young. Stiff Little Fingers, Black Sabbath, Dio, Blue Oyster Cult, Seether, Kadaver, Kris Barras Band, Queen, Joe Bonamassa, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Iron Maiden, Rush, Joe Jackson, Koos Kombuis, Michaels Schenker, Free & Juluka.

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 27

Episode 27 was recorded at midnight on 12 July 2019.  As always the show contains an eclectic mix of Rock, Metal, Ballads and Blues.  It was pretty diverse and had a good flow, the only technical hitch was an annoying little problem where the recording cut off some of the talking at the beginning of the show.  Maybe it’s trying to tell me something, anyway you may hear a couple of bits where it jumps.  I don’t like to edit the show, it’s important that it goes out as is but I am looking at a solution to this little source of irritation.

One of the highlights was the local slot where I put Wonderboom and Van Coke Kartel back to back and it just sounded amazing, such good energy from these two amazing South African bands.  The show features 26 fantastic artists including ZZ Top, Godsmack, Iron Maiden, Rory Gallagher, Ozzy Osbourne, The Uninvited, Black Label Society, Fastway, Judas Priest, The Doors, Roadkill Ghost Choir, Halestorm, Van Coke Kartel, Clutch, Rammstein, Wonderboom, Cheap Trick, Jimmy Barnes, Crash Car Burn, U.D.O., The Uninvited, The Quireboys, Slipknot, Tom Petty, The Gaslight Anthem, Tom Keifer & The Stranglers.

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 26

Episode 26 was a lot of fun, it aired on 5 July 2019 after I had been in the studio for 3 hours filling in on another show.  I was pretty warmed up at the start and pretty fried by 2 am.  The show was also pretty spontaneous because when I looked at what I had planned to play nothing felt right and I had to change everything.

The result was a great mix of rock, heavy and light, fast and slow from 1970 until 2016.  It was quite 70's weighted this week, showing once again, what a great decade it was for good music.  Bands featured included:  Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, The Stranglers, Megadeth, Parkway Drive, Journey, Twisted Sister, The Rolling Stones, Billy Squier, Anthrax, The Offspring, My Chemical Romance, Kobus!, The Who, Ivan Ivankovic, Audioslave, Van Halen, Arno Carstens, Gary Moore, Sammy Hagar, Ace Frehley, Billy Idol, Pantera, Rainbow & Bush

Check it out and if you have any questions or comments about the tracks or artists featured find me on The Story of Rock and Roll Facebook page.  TSORR it's all about the music \m/

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 25

Welcome to Episode 25 of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  The show aired at midnight on 28 June 2019 and it went extremely smoothly, probably the smoothest so far.  There were some technological challenges due to the realities of WiFi in South Africa but it's OK.  You should love this one it’s a very cool mix, something for everyone.

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 24

Ep24 of TSORR Radio Show took to the air on a chilly winters night in Midrand Johannesburg on 21 June 2019.  The thing I love about Radio is that things do not go as planned.  The State of the Nation address by the President of South Africa took place earlier that night and I started the show mentioning that instead of blasting into full throttle R ‘n’ R it would be more fitting to start with Running To The Edge Of The World, Marilyn Manson’s apocalyptic slow burning anthem of death and destruction.  The intro was great but it didn’t record so the show starts abruptly in the middle of Manson’s masterpiece.  Now you know why :-)

After that it is was full blast, up tempo, two fisted rock and roll with Dio.  For a while the song titles did indicate the heavy smog of politics, (Digging My Own Grave & The Joker & The Thief), but I cleared the air with Bowie’s Move On and then one last crazy bit of technical mayhem before settling in for a smooth run.  Check out the outro solo on James Reyne’s Ain’t it Always the Way, one of the best ever for pure emotion and the intersection between I Am The Walrus and Time is just great radio.

Among others the show featured The Winery Dogs, Stone Sour, Megadeth, Joe Jackson, Motorhead, David Bowie,  James Reyne, Marilyn Manson, Judas Priest, Joe Bonamassa, Wolfmother, Clutch, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Five Finger Death Punch, Dio, Anti-Flag, Steve Earle, Dokken, Jimi Hendrix, Stiff Little Fingers, In Flames.  The South African contributions came from The Black Cat Bones, Springbok Nude Girls and Jack Hammer.

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 23

Episode 23 was a special episode in that I reflected back a bit on some of the songs that will always be an integral part of The Story of Rock and Roll.  The Show was dedicated to my daughter who just turned 21, without her there would probably be no TSORR.  The show went live at midnight on 14 June 2019, nothing was pre-planned, which was obvious right from the first 10 seconds.  This is how it went down.

The show should have kicked off with the mighty Judas Priest but we took a listen to John Paul Young’s classic Yesterday’s Hero first.  It included mega bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, ZZ Top, Deep Purple and Rammstein, we checked out some punk in the form of The Professionals, The Sex Pistols and The Stranglers and as always we hit the SA music hard with Jack Hammer, Springbok Nude Girls and Valiant Swart.  The Metal was supplied by In Flames.  Other artists featured included The Temperance Movement, Shinedown, Tool, Tony Carey, Led Zeppelin, Billy Talent, The Uninvited, Trouble,  UFO, Tesla and Stone Sour.

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: Episode 22

Episode 22 went live from the Mix 93.8 FM studios at 00h00 on 7 June 2019.  TSORR Radio Show rocked from start to finish, kicking off with fast paced ACDC and Iron Maiden and finishing off with Guns ‘n’ Roses and Pantera.  In between we played songs from 8 countries and 6 decades.  There was a quiet moment where we paid our respects to SA rock legend Piet Botha who sadly passed away this week.  It was a special little part of the show featuring two songs, give that bit a deeper listen and focus on the words.  Piet’s passing is a huge loss for SA music and sad though it is I focused on my gratitude rather than the loss.  RIP Piet, you were very dear to us.

Episode 22 featured ACDC, Kiss, Rory Gallagher, Badlands, Van Halen, Piet Botha, Cutting Jade, Jimi Hendrix, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Jonathan Martin, Black Label Society, Steelheart, Joe Bonamassa, Iron Maiden, James Reyne, Pantera, Warren Zevon, Hazel O’Connor, The Clash, Edgar Broughton Band, Sixx AM, The Rolling Stones & Marilyn Manson.

Enjoy, TSORR: It’s all about the music \m/
