Episode 28 of Season 5 kicked off live on Rebel Rock Radio at 7 pm on 14 July 2022. I reckon this was one of the coolest starts ever and featured a little clip of Tom Petty telling the audience in Inglewood to clear the aisles. The original idea to have a mellow start was blown to Smithereens by Therapy? with ‘Trigger Inside’ followed by Scorpions and UFO with ‘Blackout’ and Lights Out’ respectively. Punches were being swung at the government and all was good. We took a listen to Trivium, Matt Heafy’s band, and they have really grown on me. We were going great guns with plenty of listeners and things were flowing nicely and then the streams cut out and no matter what I did I could not re-establish them. To save this podcast I had to abort the live show which was really annoying given the fact that I had some shit I wanted to say. It got said anyway but without the help and feedback of a live audience.
We checked out Tindrum a band that I found on the Phil Wright Tapes, and a track called 'Street Fighter' which we took a listen to. From there we had 'Welcome to the Circus', brand new from Five Finger Death Punch. By now I was losing my rhythm, resetting streams, and generally disappointing the listeners. I pulled the plug and settled on making sure the podcast worked. Some Queensrÿche and Blue Öyster Cult hit the spot and then we entered the ‘Belly Of The Best’ with Sixx A.M., this bit got a bit personal with the current state of things in SA. I experienced an armed robbery this week, 9 guys moved into our factory and took us hostage, all that lie on the floor type shit you see in the movies. It all worked out OK, I managed to outwit them and set off the alarm but it could have ended badly. The next two songs, 'Bastards' by Machine Head and '(Don’t let Em) Grind Ya Down' by Motörhead summed up the need to fight this shit. We cannot let the bad guys win. Things balanced out with Rival Sons and the stoic sentiments of 'Good Things' and we let the power of great rock music do its work, Bad Company, and Foreigner was good medicine.
We sorted out the UK Punk with Stiff Little Fingers, Sex Pistols and The Stranglers, US Punk with Fall Out Boy and The Distillers, Brody Dale is such an awesome rock chick, she should do more albums. We ended the show with a lot of SA music starting with Springbok Nude Girls, then Mark Haze, then Nibs Van Der Spuy, then Valiant Swart and we went out with Johnathan Martin’s amazing track ’I wish You Well'. This was the first time since TSORR started on Rebel Rock Radio that there wasn’t a show in the Thursday 7 to 10 slot, I found it most depressing to be honest. Apologies to all of you who tuned in and sorry to have let you down. I’d be happier if I knew how to sort it out.
