Our guest, Lauren Capo, shares her family's tragic story about their youngest child, Sophie.  At 22 weeks, Lauren and her husband found out that their baby had a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) and was referred to The Cleveland Clinic to be treated by a pediatric heart specialist.  Their sweet Sophie was born in May of 2012 and died 15 days later.  Lauren and her husband were overwhelmed with their own grief and each processed their grief differently.  Lauren admitted that she got to the point of being at "the lowest of lows".  The fact that she had two other children was what got her out of bed each day when she just wanted to ignore the world. She and her husband began to disconnect from each other when they both realized they needed to "give each other some grace and circle back to their marriage." They came together to honor their beautiful daughter and called Scott Oelslager to advocate for a mandatory procedure which takes the pulse/ox measurement in every fetus as a standard part of prenatal care.  This is a simple and inexpensive test to check for CHD. Lauren and her husband, with several other families whose children had heart issues, then testified before the House and Senate.  Lauren said that this was cathartic and empowering to do something productive while honoring their daughter. In June of 2014, the bill was passed and pulse/ox testing became mandated. This led to the first Sophie Bowl which is a fundraiser to bring attention to CHD which is one of the most common birth defects that kills more children every year than all childhood cancers combined.  This year's Sophie Bowl is the 6th annual flag football event being held at the HOF sports complex on July 10.  You can register until July 5.  Find out more information at sophiebowl.org.  This story is a beautiful and inspiring story of turning tragedy into helping others.
