Publisher's Summary:
"The Story of the Other Wise Man" by Henry van Dyke is a fictional addition to the Magi-account from the Bible. The "fourth" wise man, Artaban, is a Medes from Persia. Like the other Magi, he sees signs proclaiming that a King had been born among the Jews. He sets out with treasures to the child, too. But he stops along the way to help a dying man. He misses the caravan, so he sells one of his treasures to buy the camels and supplies for the trip. He arrives in Bethlehem too late to see the child.
After 33 years, Artaban is still a pilgrim, a seeker of the light. He arrives in Jerusalem on the day of Jesus' crucifixion. He spends his last treasure to ransom a young woman from slavery. He is then struck by a falling roof tile and is about to die, having failed in his quest to find Jesus, when a voice tells him: "Verily I say unto thee, Inasmuch as thou hast done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, thou hast done it unto me." (Matthew 25:40) So the Other Wise Man found his King.
Henry Van Dyke (1852-1933) was an American author, educator, and clergyman. By appointment of President Woodrow Wilson, he became Minister to the Netherlands and Luxembourg in 1913.

The story itself I believe was originally delivered as a sermon and later published as a short story around 1895. It is a very beautifully told story that is worth reading (it only takes about 30 minutes). I like to give these away at Christmas.
This particular book is a cheap reprint of the story which is okay because it is the original and unabridged story and not a retelling or someone elseâs interpretation of the story. It is a rather large format so it doesnât really fit in a pocket. But for the price you could afford to give a few of them away as gifts.
Five Stars
good read!
Perfect!
This story should be heard by everyone! And then followed up by action that requires a sacrifice...the rewards are AWESOME. To be able to hear this story as I drive is a blessing and an encouragement to look for those who need my help as Artiban was willing to give. Be Blessed.
I have one and gave the others as beautiful gifts worthy of reading anytime
I ended up buying 4 of these. I have one and gave the others as beautiful gifts worthy of reading anytime.
Old Christmas Tradition
This was/is a Christmas season classic in our family. When we sold the family home my oldest daughter took a copy going back to the early 1900s I had read to them each evening before Christmas in front of the fire place. I wanted to share this experience with our very youngest grandchildren who spend 4 days a week after school with us. I wanted the original. Was so glad you had a copy.
