I'm so excited to introduce you to my guest Dr. Ashley Joves! Dr. Ashley is one of my favorite docs and has become a dear friend over the past few years. Ashley is a wife to her college sweetheart, mama to three beautiful boys, and foodie dentist at Smile + Co. In 2017, she announced during a Facebook Live video that she was finally opening her own startup practice in Folsom, CA. Filled with fear (and tears!) Ashley's video was shared and viewed thousands of times. Her vulnerability resonated with doctors from around the world who know all too well the anxiety and self-doubt that come when pursuing your dreams.She's been interviewed on several podcasts regarding her startup story, and in April 2017, she was approached by Michael Arias, "The Dental Marketer," about documenting her startup in real-time. "The Making of Smile + Co." podcast series was born, where Ashley detailed the highs and lows of her startup experience on a weekly basis. From demolition to grand opening, first hire to first fire - you'll hear it all.

Dr. Cua of Perch Dentistry and I jumped on a Zoom call to discuss her story, journey into dentistry and the highs and lows she's experienced being a female entrepreneur and practice owner.

We covered all-the-things chatting about Dr. Cua's favorite hobby, her journey from biology into dentistry, how Dr. Shivam Patel (her husband and business partner) first met, the Enneagram, how to work with your spouse, International Women's Month, Lucy Hobbs Project, gender biases she's experienced and how she handles those situations. One of my biggest takeaways was a quote from Dr. Cua who said,

"The question I ask myself is, what will serve me more in this situation?"

While sharing her approach to responding to mistreatment, she shared, "Before something comes out of my mouth. I also ask myself the question, what's more important? Is it better for me to use my energy fighting back for what he did or is it better for me to respond professionally and save my energy for someone who respects me? I am very careful where I use my energy".

Dr. Erin Issac, a board-certified pediatric dentist and native of Monroeville, PA, is excited to bring a fun, fresh dental experience to the children of Pittsburgh in her practice Winning Smiles Pediatric. Besides making kids smile, Dr. Erin enjoys spending time with her family and friends, watching and playing sports (GO STEELERS!), cooking and trying out new restaurants around the city, photography--all of the office photos found in the gallery were shot by Dr. Erin herself, fashion modeling, empowering young girls to be whatever the want to be and traveling the globe. "Who were you before the world told you who you should be?"I invited Dr. Erin Issac to be the very first guest of The Story Project because of her perspective and insights as a startup pediatric dentist and woman in dentistry. We discussed the stereotypes, social norms and standards that are placed on women inside and outside of dentistry and how to lean into your authentic self. Having a background in fashion modeling, college athletics and graduating from an Ivy League University made for an incredible dialogue around the truth that young girls should be taught that they can have both brains and beauty. We wrapped up discussing habits that lead to a healthy mindset and how taking care of our mental and physical health is equally important.
