The Streaming Heap

Join Lin and Eric as they finish their journey through the first season of The 3 Body Problem. They talk about the hardness of sci-fi, point out how the show doesn't save the cat, reopen the violence debate (which one of them clearly won), and consider the state of Chinese science-fiction.

In this week's episode of inappropriate laughter, we discuss The 3 Body Problem, but in order to discuss that, we first have to discuss China, its history, and Lin's tragic backstory. I guess our podcast will never get play in Beijing.

Two episodes in two weeks? What's happening? Lin and Eric discuss everything they've been watching lately, including Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender. Eric also admits to kind of liking a Jurassic World movie; Lin gets brainwashed by graffiti into watching lots of anime; and they get into the second part of Denis Villenueve's Dune, even if neither of them can pronounce "Denis Villeneuve."

In this enormous episode, we finally get over the Halo Curse (TM) and talk about Season 2 of the live action Halo series. One of us kinda liked it, and the other hates it with the burning fire of a dozen halos. Are we glad Makee is back? Does the Fall of Reach stack up against previous stories in the Halo universe? What's the deal with Batman-Kwan and her magic plot progression powers? Why are we already getting Forerunners, the Flood, and an arbiter not voiced by Keith David? Where's Johnson? All this and more are discussed, but strap in. It's gonna get bumpy.

In this belated episode, we finally talk about the second half of Netflix's Pluto. Lin asks why he finds Dr. Tenma so sexy and whether it has anything to do with 1,001 Arabian Nights, while Eric goes full warmonger when discussing Epsilon being a wussy little pacifist whose inaction got his friends killed. Then we get into some other things, like Hijack, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and The Beekeeper.

In this lengthy episode, we talk about the first half of Pluto, a covert Astro-Boy cartoon on Netflix that is all about robo-racism, the trauma of war, homelessness, indefinite detention of alleged terrorists, the search for WMDs in foreign desert lands, and whether robot cops could have enough autonomy to be bastards. How will Astro-Boy get out of this wacky adventure? ...By dying. He gets out of it by dying. After we dissect that, we talk about Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Marvel's Echo, and a sitcom that ended half a decade ago.

Lin and Eric kick off the new year by talking about their favorite filmmaker, Zack Snyder, and his new masterwork of epic proportions. Imagine Seven Samurai, but in space with Nazis! What a completely original and groundbreaking premise, which uses intense slow-motion to punctuate every scene, brilliant actors given tons of character development to work with, and an understated sense of scope that delivers a poignant message overflowing with meaning. Listen to Eric lose his mind! After that, they talk about Picard Season 3, the PS5's Spider-Man 2, and What If Season 2.
