Shawn Sullivan knew he wanted to work in sports when he was in college. But the letters and phone calls to the big teams in Boston weren’t being returned. His Southern New Hampshire University professor gave him the best advice: “Stay persistent.” That instructor discovered the Boston Garden arena was seeking tour guides – not exactly the type of job Sullivan was imagining, but it was a start.
His instructor couldn’t have been more right. One Friday night, Sullivan’s tour group included the Boston Celtics’ marketing department. One manager recognized his name right away: Those phone calls certainly hadn’t gone unnoticed. She mentioned an internship had opened up at the last minute, allowing Sullivan the opportunity to put his sport management knowledge to use.
Sullivan ’95 is now the chief marketing officer with the Boston Celtics. Hear more about his story, his advice for today’s college students and how his sport management degree from SNHU set him up for success.

When Dimitrios Efstathiou was in law school, he knew he wanted to work in sports. But after completing his internship with Major League Soccer in 2003, he found no full-time opportunities there and had to move on. Fast-forward to 2011: The connections Dimitrios made and nurtured from that internship led him back to MLS. Now, as the league’s vice president of business and legal affairs, he handles strategic partnerships and special projects from the commissioner’s office.
