  • 35: Substantive Stories feat. Rommel Ruiz | Love Gave

Rommel Ruiz is a strong storyteller and visual communicator, and his work is a significant part of what makes Love Gave such a powerful book. The words are simple and clear and his illustrations beautifully help bring the message of the book to life.

In this episode we talk about what his goals with this project were and the role of art in the life of a Christian.

  • 34: Substantive Stories feat. Quina Aragon | Love Gave

This week we welcome back returning guest Quina Aragon! Quina is a writer, editor, and spoken word artist.

If you haven's listened to Quina's first appearance on Episode 10 (link below), you should absolutely check it out to hear about her testimony and what lead her to start writing children's books.

Love Gave continues to build on the themes of a fully Trinitarian Gospel and the ways that each member of the Godhead loves and works in relation to us. Last time, in Love Made, Quina focused on the creative nature of the Father and how parents mirror those qualities with their children. This time, Love Gave focuses on the way Jesus engages humanity as a friend and how we can overcome our big problem to enjoy true fellowship with him!

We hope you enjoy (both the book and our conversation) and share with your friends!

  • 33: Substantive Cinema | Soul feat. Mitch Wiley

We're excited to share our first Substantive Cinema of the new year with you all!

Soul is the latest release from Pixar Animation Studios. At first look, it may seem like an odd premise for a film primarily targeted to a younger audience, but Soul's plot and themes are wonderful springboards for all sorts of valuable conversations.

This week we're joined by Mitch Wiley and we talk about: how Christians discern value in entertainment & the arts, how our lives are enriched by the common grace all around us, and what gives one's life true purpose.

  • 31: The Substance Reflects | Critical Race Theory

This week on The Substance we are taking an introductory look at Critical Race Theory. Lots of folks in the culture and The Church have strong opinions about it, but when a topic gets so much cultural heat, it's easy not to approach it critically and thoughtfully.

On this episode we cover the history of CRT, attempt to fairly define CRT, and engage with what the Bible says about the tenets and applications of it.

    Biblical Support:

    1) Sin and Responsibility, (Jer 31:29-30; Eze 18:1-4, 25; Jos 7:10-11, 20; Ex 34:6; Matt 23:29-31)

    2) Hypocrisy and Self-Deceit, (Jer 17:9-10; Eph 4:20; Heb 3:13)

    3) Partiality, (Deut 10:17-18, Eph 6:9)

    4) Oppression, (Ex 3:7-9; Ps 10:3-7; Is 10:1-3; Lk 4:18; Jn 8:32-36

    5) Liberation, (Acts 13:39; Rom 6:17-19; 8:2; Rev 1:5)

    6) Social Justice (Job 29:12-17; Prov 13:23, 14:31, 19:17, 21:13, 22:16, 31:9, Luke 10:25-27,29,36-37; 2 Cor 9:7-9, James 1:22,25-2:7)

    7) Restoration. (Lev 6:1-5; Luke 19:6-10; Eph 4:22-24, 28)

We've got another Topic Toss Up for you guys this week! There's a listener question following up on the topic of whether or not institutions should rename their buildings in light of a racist past, something we covered in Episode 20, the practice of "Christian Worldview Analysis," and being godly in our social media etiquette.

  • 28: The Substance Reflects | News and Sources

It's hard to overstate the importance of being able to discern sources and consume the news in a healthy and appropriate manner. The last few years have especially highlighted this, but there has never been a time where this was unimportant. It seems like every week there are articles, stories, tweets, etc. about matters relating to politics, economics, sociology, public health, justice systems, and more. These are all important topics and people of faith ought to be exemplary in our communities as models of healthy interpreters of truth.
