President Obama has finally directed the federal government to protect the electric grid against the serious danger that it will be destroyed – and with it our country – by an expected, powerful solar storm.

Unfortunately, the new Executive Order issued last week is long on directives – most of which will be executed, if at all, after Mr. Obama has left office. Worse yet, it’s short on actual protection, primarily because no money seems to have been allocated for that purpose.

The timing of the President’s initiative only served to highlight its inadequacies. The week before, federal regulators issued a dangerously deficient standard for utility mitigation of the effects of space weather. Then, within hours of his order’s publication, the earth was subjected to a significant, but this time non-destructive, solar storm.

Maybe the sun is telling us something? Secure the grid, now!
