FOURTH AND LONG-HAUL

Since the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers first met at Mexico City’s Azteca in 2005, American football has slowly but surely proven its ability to travel. Nine NFL games are scheduled overseas this year, five of those in Europe, with appetite on the continent higher than ever.

The magazine explores the wonders of this now- global sport, without losing sight of what makes it great at home. For America, see ‘Love & Hate’, Brent Dougherty’s guide to college football and Tennessee (page 44); for the bigger picture, ‘Game of Zones’ plots the NFL’s worldwide expansion. That starts on page 99.

Our Bluffer’s Guide to the Super Bowl, meanwhile, covers everything you might want to know about the sport’s most-watched event. Elsewhere, a tour through the sport’s great movers and shakers – not least Elvis Presley’s audience with President Nixon at the White House – paints a picture of gridiron’s wider influence.

There’s plenty more we don’t have room to flag here, but don’t miss Kevin Sabitus’ photography portfolio from page 104 – it’s as good an insight into the NFL’s pace and emotion as you’ll find in print.

Enjoy your magazine!
