Today the show notes are very brief, no links, no long story, just an introduction to the show so new folks that find it know what the heck is going on.  In 2008 I said for the first time on the air, “you are never gonna pay off all your debt, then call me up and say Jack you are such a jerk, now I have no debt and all this stupid money”.  Over the years from time to time I said many versions of this.  Eventually people started actually doing it as a joke and it become a thing.

So today for episode 2500 we hear from a ton of listeners as to why I am a jerk.  In all seriousness if you are a modern survivalist, prepper, permaculturist or just a fan of liberty and ever feel that you are alone, just pull up this episode and give it a listen and you will instantly realize you are definitely not alone.

Woh! What is up with that title. I know we have a lot of strong political views in Permaculture. And of all stripes, liberals, conservatives and a lot of libertarians. And many who have been in the movement a very long time are quite proud of what ever political stripe they have.

So does this question make sense? I think that it does, and I think it leads many to start practicing anarchism without even knowing it or realizing it.

Understand there are two real types of anarchism at the individual level. I call these philosophical and action based. Strangely you’d think the philosophical would come easier but we all do the action based stuff in degrees. Please understand these two definitions are no one’s but my own.

Philosophical Anarchism is the declaring of yourself to be an anarchist and then making choices about thoughts, issues and actions based on that.

Action Based Anarchism – is the ignoring or disobeying of authority so long as doing so does not violate the principle of non aggression.

For instance here are some action based anarchist things many of us have done or would do if certain circumstances occurred…

Dressing the way you want to vs. the way you are “supposed to”

Marrying who ever you choose instead of having an arranged marriage

Using an illegal substance, including a pain pill from your last prescription

Driving over the speed limit when no danger is present to another by doing so

Keeping 10 chickens when the code says you can only have four

Feeding homeless people even if the law says you can’t

Using violent force to stop one person from harming another.

 

Those are just a few examples. To be clear on what is not anarchism here are some things people think are anarchist that are not.

Stealing your neighbors property. This violates non aggression and is not anarchism.

Using violent force to harm another person because you simply don’t like them, again this violates non aggression.

Damaging property with vandalism, arson, etc. Again this violates non aggression.

Ron Finely – no idea his politics but an anarchist in action

Paul Wheaton – not an anarchist but damn sure practices anarchy

Mark Sheppard – libertarian at a minimum, expert systems martial artist

Why Permaculture leads to anarchy

It leads to real solutions, often that are illegal but work

Ethics based and concerned with “people care”

Teaches the practice of currency creation and private banking

It is a design science which causes you to question everything

No room for bureaucracy, a tree doesn’t care about your title

A meritocracy in other words those that get shit done succeed

It is about rewilding humans to live with nature vs. opposing it

Promotes community interdependence vs system and centralized dependence

Focuses on real wealth above persevered wealth

Creates wealth that is hard if not impossible to tax

Leads naturally to commerce at a local level

Can not be controlled, policed, slowed down or stopped by the oligarchy

Final thoughts on what real freedom is and why morality is required for it

Today I wanted to take a moment to take a look at the concept of consumerism and how it directly conflicts with the preparedness lifestyle. Now don’t get me wrong I am a capitalist libertarian, I believe in the free market but I also believe in making informed consumer decisions.

Consumerism is the opposite of that, consumerism is a heard mentality where providers and producers spend time competing for existing market share and replacing products that are still functional. An informed consumer market requires producers and providers to innovate and create better longer lasting products and services.

Are we in a “climax stage” as in Permaculture

Are companies innovating or competing in existing markets

Working Man v. Salary Man v. Business Man v. Renaissance Man

How our grandparents evaluated a purchase of a product

Does anything I have fill the role now

How long will it last

What will it do for me and my family

How long must I work to pay for it

If I don’t buy it what difference will it really make

How companies market products today

Can we create a fad/cult following around it

What existing market share can we capture with it

Can we build a market to sell subsequent products to

Is it a consumable or designed to fail

How cheaply can we manufacture it

Can we outsource most of the work

Will it last long enough to avoid returns

Can we sell it for less than the competition

Or can we justify a premium at little to no internal cost

How do we avoid the consumerist trap and still have fun and cool stuff

Avoiding debt solves most of the problems

Have a 48 hour waiting period on major purchases

Ask the questions our grandparents did

Cup of Oil – olive, avocado, coconut (0 carbs)

One large raw egg (.4 carbs)

One tbs of mustard (0 carbs)

One tbs of ACV (0 carbs)

One tsp of salt (0 carbs)

Now make the blue cheese dressing

One cup of good mayo (.4 carbs see above)

One cup of whole fat organic sour cream (9.8 carbs)

Two tbs of organic whipping cream (.84 carbs)

3/4 cup of blue cheese crumbles (6 grams carbs)

One tsp of salt

One tsp of coarse cracked black (Tellicherry is Best)
