You can still be functioning and not be flourishing. But what happens when tiredness becomes your baseline, when you have been leading this way for so long that unsustainable patterns begin to feel completely normal?
In Episode 2 of Hidden Exhaustion: When You’re Still Functioning but No Longer Flourishing, Dr Adekunle Adenipekun turns to Exodus 18:13–24 and the encounter between Moses and his father-in-law, Jethro.
Moses is doing good work. Faithful work. Necessary work. He is serving people, resolving disputes and helping them understand God’s ways. Yet Jethro watches the way Moses is carrying that responsibility and tells him:
“What you are doing is not good.”
The problem was not the work. The problem was the way the work was being carried.
This episode explores normalised exhaustion in Christian leadership and how pastors, ministry leaders, organisational leaders and others carrying sustained responsibility can gradually accept unsustainable patterns as simply the way leadership works.
Jethro’s counsel also leads us to 2 Timothy 2:1–2, where Paul instructs Timothy to entrust what he has received to faithful people who will teach others also. Healthy leadership does not endlessly concentrate responsibility in one person. It develops and entrusts others.
The episode asks:
• What have I started accepting as normal simply because I have lived with it for so long?
• Where has constant tiredness become part of the way I lead?
• What am I carrying that could be shared or entrusted to someone else?
• Does my leadership need greater resilience, or does something in the structure itself need to change?
This week’s practice: The Leadership Load Audit
Take some quiet time to identify what you are currently carrying and ask:
What must I carry? What could be shared? What could be entrusted? And what am I carrying simply because I have become accustomed to carrying it?
The goal is not to abandon responsibility. It is to learn to carry responsibility faithfully and sustainably.
Familiar does not necessarily mean healthy.
