Henry talks with Dr David Roy about the state of education in Australia. 

Dr David Roy is a Lecturer and Researcher in Education and Creative Arts at the University of Newcastle. Prior to entering academia, he spent 17 years as a classroom teacher, experience that continues to shape his research, teaching, and community engagement.

Dr Roy’s work focuses on inclusion and equity in education, with particular expertise in disability, arts engagement, and education policy. He is committed to translating research into practice and works collaboratively with schools, systems, and policymakers across Australia. Engaging with representatives from across the political spectrum, he advocates for evidence-informed approaches that strengthen access, participation, and outcomes for children and young people with disability, particularly through the Arts.

An accomplished author, Dr Roy has written 12 books and numerous peer-reviewed articles and professional publications. His work has been widely recognised. He was nominated for the 2006 Saltire/TES Scottish Education Publication of the Year and for the Educational Publishing Awards Australia Tertiary (Wholly Australian) Teaching and Learning – Blended Learning (2020), as well as the Drama Victoria Best New Australian Publication (2020). In 2013, he won the Best New Australian Publication for VCE Drama and/or VCE Theatre Studies. He was also named a ‘Most Influential Educator 2022 (Australia)’ and received the 2022 University of Newcastle CHSF Leadership Award.

His most recent publications include Teaching the Arts: Early Childhood and Primary (2025), published by Cambridge University Press, and The Inclusive Teacher (2025), published by Routledge.
