Our words matter and can bind us to unconscious patterns. Recently I dropped into a conversation on the social media platform Clubhouse about “Somatics”. The hosts were discussing the “nervous system”, a new and medicalized way of describing a complex network that involves sinew, chi and primordial patterns or archetypal energetics. In the few minutes I was listening in they said the word “nervous” system about 15 times. They invited a therapist to join the conversation and the first thing she said was “thank you and I just want to say, I’m nervous”. The power of naming can liberate us or bind us.
