Today, I sit down with my wife, Katerina Marcello. As someone who does not live with Type 1 Diabetes, Katerina represents those who are still affected by T1D, encountering it daily as a support system.

Together, we recount our recent ascent of Kilimanjaro– at 19,341 ft, the tallest mountain in Africa.

In early 2026, we trekked via the Machame Route on a seven-day journey to the summit, Uhuru Peak. Having been married recently that November, we indeed did this as our honeymoon.

Today, I talk about my personal journey while training for and running my two marathons. As a T1D, in October 2023, I ran the BayState Marathon in Lowell, Massachusetts. And in September 2025, I ran the Jack & Jill Downhill Marathon in the Poconos, Pennsylvania. Leading up to my first marathon, I discuss the life events that led me to stop drinking alcohol.

Two and a half years into sobriety, the data is clear—my T1D management and athletic performance are fueled by that one choice. We're talking about more than just miles today; we're talking about the mental fortitude and the 'machine' precision required to normalize the movement of not drinking in an endurance culture.

Whether you're training for your first race or just trying to keep your glucose in range, let's get to work.

Today, I am joined by two incredible leaders from the Diabetes Sports Project (DSP): Dr. Joe Henske and Lauren Adams.

Dr. Henske is a clinical endocrinologist, researcher, and Director of the Diabetes Program at the University of Arkansas, Medical Sciences. Having completed 15 marathons, he is currently leading a groundbreaking study on T1D athletes competing in the Boston Marathon.

Joining him is Lauren Adams, a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist with nearly two decades of experience blending clinical expertise with a passion for community advocacy– having completed 12 marathons.

As ambassadors for the Diabetes Sports Project, Joe and Lauren work to empower the millions affected by diabetes, proving through elite competition that proper management and a positive outlook make any dream achievable.

We dive into the intersection of high-level athletics and diabetes technology. We discuss Dr. Henske's latest research on marathoners, Lauren's insights on nutritional victory, and how they are both working to provide the roadmap for the next generation of T1D athletes to perform at the highest levels of sport.

In 2021, he accomplished a first-ever run from Disneyland to Disney World. And most recently, he completed the equivalent of 10 consecutive Ironmans in 3 weeks. Today I talk with T1D Ultra Endurance Athlete, the one and only Roddy Riddle. Roddy is a former International cyclist who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the late age of 40.

In 2013, he ran the Marathon Des Sables Ultra Marathon, which is a 154-mile race in the Sahara Desert of Morocco.

In 2016, he first attempted the Arctic 6633 Ultra Marathon, which is a 352-mile race in the Yukon of Canada, pulling out only 70 miles from the finish line. One year later in 2017, he returned to become the first Scotsman and first T1D to finish the Arctic 6633 in 2nd place; holding the 6th fastest time in race history.

Roddy's motto is "Rule Type 1 Diabetes, don't let it rule you."
