The fence of the rectangular court of the Tabernacle measured 100 cubits in length. In the Bible, a cubit was set as the length extending from one’s elbow to the tip of his finger, about 45 cm in today’s measurement. As such, that the fence of the court of the Tabernacle was 100 cubits long means that it was about 45 m, and that its width was 50 cubits means that it was approximately 22.5 m wide. So this was the size of the House in which God dwelt among the people of Israel in the Old Testament’s time.

This passage explains the pillars, the screen gate, hangings of fine white linen, bands, hooks, bronze sockets, and bronze pegs of the court of the Tabernacle. The Tabernacle was a place where God dwelt. The size of the rectangular court measured approximately 45 m (its north and south sides) by 22.5 m (its east and west sides). The Tabernacle itself was a small structure with its roof of a fourfold covering. The court of the Tabernacle in contrast, was broad like a large open courtyard.

For any sinner among the people of Israel to be remitted from his sins, had to bring a sacrificial animal to the Tabernacle, pass his sins onto it by laying his hands on its head, draw its blood, and then hand this blood over to the priest. The priest in the line of duty then put this blood of the sacrificial animal on the horns of the altar of burnt offering, laid its fat and flesh on the altar, and burnt them with fire as a sweet aroma to the Lord God. Even the High Priest had to lay his hands on a sacrificial animal and pass his sins onto the animal before the altar of burnt offering in order to receive the remission of his sins. This was the sacrifice of the atonement offered at the altar of burnt offering which was made from acacia wood and was overlaid with bronze, and this sacrifice of the remission of sins was offered only through the laying on of hands and the shedding of blood.

If we were to step inside the Holy Place, the House of God, we would first see the lampstand, the table of showbread, and the altar of incense. The altar of incense was put in front of the entrance to the Most Holy, where the mercy seat was located, past the lampstand and the table of showbread. The length and width of this altar of incense were both one cubit, while its height was two cubits. In the Bible, a cubit is approximately 45-50 cm in today’s measurement. So the altar of incense was a rather small square, measuring around 50 cm in length and width and 100 cm in height. And like the altar of burnt offering, the altar of incense also had horns on its four upper corners. Made of acacia wood, the altar of incense was completely overlaid with gold.

The boards of the Tabernacle where God dwelt were all overlaid with gold. For each board of the Tabernacle to stand upright, God told Moses to make two silver sockets. The spiritual meaning of placing two silver sockets under each board is as follows. In the Bible, gold refers to faith that does not change in time. That these sockets of silver were placed under the boards overlaid with this gold means that God has given us two gifts that guarantee our salvation. In other words, it means that Jesus completed our salvation from sin by being baptized and shedding His blood.

The inside of the Tabernacle was divided into two main parts: The Holy Place and the Most Holy. A veil was hung between them as a divider, and the Ark of the Testimony was located behind this veil inside the Most Holy. The covering of the Ark is also known as the mercy seat.
In the Bible, a cubit is the length stretching from the tip of the finger to the elbow. So, a cubit in the Old Testament is generally considered to be about 500 mm in today’s unit of measurement. Then, at two and half cubits, the length of the mercy was about 1.0m in today’s measurement; its width and length, at a cubit and a half each, were around 750 mm. Below this mercy seat was the Ark of the Testimony, and the Ark was also made of acacia wood and overlaid with pure gold. At both ends of the mercy seat, there were two cherubim stretching out their wings above, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and their faces were toward the mercy seat facing each other. The mercy seat, as its name goes, is where God bestowed His grace.

This passage describes the lampstand of the Tabernacle. Today, I would like to explain the spiritual meaning of its ornamental knobs, flowers and lamps. God commanded Moses to first make the shaft of the lamp stand out of one lump of gold. So the shaft was molded first, and then from this shaft branches were hammered out. Three branches came out of each side of the lampstand, and on each branch three bowls like almond blossoms were made, and then ornamental knobs and flowers were made. Like this, seven lamps were placed on top of the branches. Oil was then put into these seven lamps to light them. The lampstand thus illuminated brightly the inside of the Holy Place and all of its utensils as well.

Today we will look at the spiritual meanings hidden in the garments of the High Priest. These garments were to be clothed on Aaron and his sons. Through the garments of the High Priest we will recognize by faith the plan of God that has saved us from sin.
God commanded Moses to consecrate his brother Aaron and Aaron’s sons that they might minister to God as priests. And God also commanded Moses to make their garments according to the pattern that He showed him.

Exodus 28:36 says, “You shall also make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it, like the engraving of a signet: HOLINESS TO THE LORD.” This plate was fixed with a blue cord so that it would not fall from the turban.
What is God showing us with this turban of the High Priest? The turban and its ornament imply that Jesus Christ took upon all our sins through the baptism that He received from John the Baptist and has thereby cleansed away all our sins.

Let us now turn our attention to the breastplate with which the High Priest judged for the people of Israel. The above passage tells us that the breastplate of judgment was made of a fabric doubled into a square measuring a span in both its length and width. This fabric was artistically woven together of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet thread and fine woven linen. On this fabric, twelve precious stones were set, three on each row for a total of four rows. God also told Moses to put the Urim and the Thummim in the breastplate of judgment. The Urim and the Thummim here respectively mean ‘light and perfection.’
