Psalm 3 Worksheet
Notice this is the first Psalm with a ___________________!
If you are looking for a kind of Psalm this is, you could call it a “Trouble & __________________” Psalm.
David’s Trouble V. 1-2
That’s the first instance of the word __________________ in the Psalms.
Three times the Hebrew root for _________________ occurs.
David’s _______________________ V. 3
David says three things here that YHWH is for him –
YHWH, you are my _________________________! Genesis 15:1
YHWH, you are my _________________________!
YHWH, you are the One who ______________________ up my head!
David’s Trust V. 4-6
What a great Psalm about how we can trust God even in the midst of our troubles and things that _____________________ us!
So there’s the word for us: ___________________ pour your heart out to God, leaving your situation in His hands, and then put your head on the pillow!
“When prayer leads the van, deliverance brings up the rear!” -Thomas Watson
Do you see what David is doing in his prayer time?
He is _______________________ to himself!
David’s _______________________ prayer! V. 7-8
There are two key verbs here as David prays to the Lord: ____________________ and save!
Maybe that’s why we don’t wrestle more with God – Because deep down we know there’s a ___________________ for this kind of commitment to God!
A person who prays like this understands three dynamics:
1. That without God they can do nothing!
2. That the only reason they defeated giants in the past was that God did it!
3. That being a man or woman of God means praying directly to God in a spirit of trust, and then stepping out in ____________, leaving the results to God.
A Preacher’s Ideal Audience! Acts 17:10-15
5 Characteristics of a Preacher’s Ideal Audience:
1. Open _______________ V. 11
2. Warm ______________ V. 11
3. Eagerness to ____________________ V. 11
4. Commitment to ________________ what they have heard is Biblical V. 11
Like a lot of religious people the Thessalonians chose their religious _________________ over the Bible. Later the Athenians are going to choose their philosophical beliefs over the Bible. But the Bible was the Berean’s ______________________!
5. A Will to __________________ on the Truth they have heard V. 12
Here’s an acronym for BEREANS for you –

“When the child of God
looks into the Word of God
and sees the Son of God,
he or she is transformed

Praying for fellow believers
When individual Christians in a church don’t seek to know and live by Biblical truth, they wind up parroting back to each other the cultural attitudes and actions around them. They often wind up convincing themselves that unbiblical attitudes and actions are okay with God, because they are okay with each other.
Read Colossians 1:9-14 Praying for fellow believers Let’s Pray!
Three Main Thrusts of Praying for fellow believers:
1. Pray believers through “the ongoing circle of growth.” V. 9-10
What was Paul’s first prayer request for these believers?
To be filled with spiritual knowledge.
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching (what you should believe), for reproof (what you should not believe), for correction (how you should not behave), and for training in righteousness (how you should behave), that the man of God may be complete, equipped in every good work. -2 Timothy 3:16-17
But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. -James 1:22
If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. -James 1:26
2. Pray for believers to rely on God’s power to joyfully persevere V. 11
His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us to His own glory and excellence. -2 Peter 1:3
The word for endurance is for perservering when facing difficult circumstances; The word for patience is for perservering when facing difficult people!
Believers do not face difficult circumstances and people alone – God is with us as we face those circumstances and people.
A lot of our bad reactions to our circumstances happen because we feel helpless – Paul is trying to relate to us here that the believer is never without help – we can do all things God has called us to through Christ who gives us strength.
3. Pray for believers to have God’s perspective on their identity V. 12-14
We are no longer sinners bound for Hell; we are now redeemed and forgiven saints who are Family Heirs of Christ’s Kingdom!
As Usual… Acts 17:1-10
You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. -Acts 1:8
I did, I do, and I ___________________ do… V. 2
Saved people are sinners saved by grace who don’t trust in their own goodness but are living by __________________ in Jesus and seeking to apply God’s Word to their lives in reliance on the Holy Spirit.
Our Job is to believe and _______________ the truth of the Bible about Jesus V. 2-3
Paul REASONED with them from the scriptures, EXPLAINING and PROVING…
After asking them questions, Paul opened up Old Testament scrolls and pointed out what they said, and then expressed his _______________ that Jesus was who the prophets had talked about!
Some are p______________ and become a great church V. 4
For the Lord’s message rang out from you, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place that your faith in God has gone out, so we don’t need to say anything. -I Thessalonians 1:8
Some become p______________ of Paul and the church 5-10
“It is necessary to pass through many troubles on our way into the kingdom of God.” –Acts 14:21b
The message of Jesus so challenged the decadent culture around them, and converts so stuck out as having differing ______________, that the gospel was flipping the world upside down! It’s still doing it today!
Jesus Reproduces
The mission of the Tabernacle is to reproduce faithful and fruitful followers of Jesus Christ.
Read Colossians 1:1-8 Jesus Reproduces Let’s Pray!
Jesus reproduces new church families V. 1-2
God used the church in Ephesus to plant scores of churches throughout Asia Minor, including 100 miles east in the tri-city area of Colossae, Laodicea (ten miles from Colossae), and Hierapolis (13 miles from Colossae).
As we read Colossians we understand that the church was being distracted by false teachers away from the simple gospel message that came from the apostles to them through the ministry of Erastus.
Over 60% of Colossians is reflected in Ephesians. But in Ephesians the emphasis is on the church as the body of Christ; In Colossians, the emphasis is on Christ as the Head of the Church.
We have had the complete Bible since the end of the first century AD. It is our authority for teaching and clarifying correct doctrine, and refuting the false teachers in our day when they say wrong things about Jesus and salvation.
We don’t become saints by our work for Christ; We are declared saints by believing in Christ’s work for us!
Jesus reproduces faithful followers V. 3-5a
Throughout the apostle’s writings they speak of how faith, hope, and love are the trademark characteristics of believers (1 Corinthians 13:13).
And this is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as He has commanded us. -1 John 3:23
Jesus reproduces fruitful followers V. 5b-8
The Colossians didn’t need to learn more secret knowledge like the false teachers had told them, they needed to focus their lives around the biblical knowledge they already had. That’s what would make them faithful and fruitful!
Wrong ideas in the head always lead to wrong actions in life. But biblical ideas in our heads can lead us to experiencing full life in Christ, the Head of all things.
MUST Trust Situations Acts 16:19-40
___________________ Circumstances V. 19-24
___________________ Responses V. 25-26
____________________ Results V. 27-34
_____________________ Rights V. 35-40
The Kinds of suffering situations we may find ourselves in:
1. A ______________________ Situation…We can’t really know the reason we are suffering.
2. A ‘Used of God’ Situation…
3. A ______________________ Situation…
4. A T_____________________ Situation…

The godly man uses His energy to delight in God’s Word, but the ungodly use their energy to plot against God’s rule.

Clearly the New Testament ___________________ saw this as a Messianic Psalm referring to Jesus Christ!
