When you have a need…turn to your church leaders V. 13-15
When we call the church leaders to pray we are recognizing our complete dependence upon God in our situation.
Elders do two things when they pray over you: they minister the Word of God to your situation and they pray for your situation
After the prayer time with the church leaders, there should be great confidence that our lives are in God’s hands no matter what happens in the days ahead, and His grace will be sufficient for us to face whatever comes.
God always answers our prayer! Sometimes He answers ‘Yes,’ sometimes He answers ‘No,’ and sometimes He answers ‘Wait.’
And God said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” -2 Corinthians 12:9
When you have a need…turn to your fellow Christians V. 16-20
But here is a unique aspect of Biblical Christianity: the Priesthood of the Believer – that each of us is equipped by God at salvation to minister the truth of God’s Word to each other!
James is teaching that Christians need honest and open relationships with other Christians that help each root out the power of the sins we too often return to after confessing them to the Lord.
Confessing your sins to other believers has the following effects:
1. It helps you avoid self-deception
2. It keeps you from minimizing sin’s ugliness
3. It often robs sin of the power it has when kept in darkness
4. It allows another to minister to you, and you to another (It should be two-way)
5. It provides accountability to help defeat that sin over time (because you know the other person is going to ask you about it)
Folks, when you begin practicing mutual confession and accountability with other believers, you begin experiencing one of the highest forms of what one another can mean in your walk with God and one another!
Serving our gifts to one another
Taken together, the one anothers give us a wonderful portrait of what growing Christians look like!
I Peter 4:7-11
The apostles’ writings are filled with teaching on our responsibilities to one another!
The fact that this life is relatively short compared to the eternity to follow should be the context we evaluate every decision in.
Sometimes Christians who believe the end as we know it is coming are accused of being alarmists! But when we read The Book of Revelation we see that the way the Bible speaks of end times is fundamentally optimistic!
The matter of urgency for us is getting people ready to meet their God, which sooner or later will happen for all mankind.
Christians Love One Another fervently V. 8
Loving fervently means that we are patient with peoples quirks, especially with those who mean well but just haven’t quite yet “learned to do.”
Loving fervently also means bringing Christians back together who have not gotten past a grudge.
Loving fervently keeps both present and future sins from happening!
Christians are hospitable with one another V. 9
Christians minister their spiritual gifts to others V. 10-12
Four Approaches to “Miraculous Gifts” Like Speaking in Tongues:
M.G. ceased at the end of the apostolic age (their purpose was to confirm apostolic authority)
M.G. may exist today, but based on I Corinthians 14 they are not to be part of worship services
M.G. do exist today, and we should be open to their use in worship services today, with the restrictions spoken of in I Cor. 14
M.G. do exist today, and we’re really not having church unless they DO happen in our worship services; no restrictions should be placed on the Spirit’s “moving”

“Non-Miraculous” Spiritual Gifts Listed in the Bible:

Discernment Faith Giving Mercy

Key Point: each of the “non-miraculous” gifts is referred to elsewhere in the apostle’s writings as a command for all believers! What all of us are commanded to do some of us are especially gifted to do.
From Him the whole body, fitted and knit together by every supporting ligament, promotes the growth of the body for building up itself in love by the proper working of each individual part. -Ephesians 4:16

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account, so that they can do this with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you. -Hebrews 13:17

The crown of rejoicing – given for pouring oneself into others in evangelism and discipleship (I Thessalonians 2:19; Philippians 4:1)

Except pastors retain this in view, it can by no means be that they will in good earnest proceed in the course of their calling, but will, on the contrary, become often faint; for there are innumerable hindrances which are sufficient to discourage the most prudent. They have often to do with ungrateful men, from whom they receive an unworthy reward, long and great labors are often in vain; Satan sometimes prevails in his wicked devices. Lest then, the faithful servant of Christ should be broken down, there is for him one and only one remedy, - to turn his eyes to the coming of Christ. Thus it will be, that he, who seems to derive no encouragement from men, will assiduously go on in his labours, knowing that a great reward is prepared for him by the Lord. -John Calvin
When ‘Have to’ turned into ‘Want to’
Galatians 2:15-21
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. -2 Corinthians 5:21
Because of what Christ did for me in His death and resurrection, I don’t have to worry about measuring up ever again – what I “have to do” before God has now given way to what “I want to do” for God!
The reason we needed saving: we “have to” measure up but failed V. 15-19
The word Law can refer to: the first 5 books of the O.T.; the entire O.T.; the Mosaic Law God gave at Mount Sinai, including the 10 commands; Roman Law; the Law of Christ to love one another; the law of sin that believers deal with.
In Galatians Paul is dealing with the mindset he used to have as a Pharisee, that justification before God could only come by obeying Israel’s civil law.
But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine. -1 Timothy 1:8-10
Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said “You shall not covet.” -Romans 7:7
Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good. -Romans 7:12
Paul’s old approach to the law was like how many conscientious students approach taking a test at their school.
For whoever shall keep the whole law, but stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. -James 2:10
Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them. But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for ‘the just shall live by faith.’ -Galatians 3:10-11
Those who are crucified with Christ now live by “want to” instead of “Have to” V. 20-21
Look at Galatians 2:20
I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. -Galatians 2:20
Having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances… -Ephesians 2:15a
And you, being dead in your trespasses…He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken them out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. -Colossians 2:13-14

Put Off the deeds of your old sinful nature V. 5-11
We are called to love God and one another – undealt with sin messes up our fellowship with God and with one another, whereas doing what God says brings us closer to God and one another.

Him we preach, warning (admonishing) every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect (mature) in Christ Jesus. -Colossians 1:28
The word admonish is the same word as the one in 1:28 that spoke of warning (Noutheteo). All Christians are called to teach and admonish their fellow believers, pouring into them encouragement and exhortation from the Bible.
