#QandA | A smartphone is the most widely used electronic device in daily life for many of us. The days of mobile phones being mainly used to call someone or send a text message are long gone – now, they operate as portable computers, with a vast array of apps for everything from social networking to online banking. The extent to which we rely on our phones, plus the amount of data they contain, means that phone security is crucial.

Guest: Olivier Tshimbidi, Chief Information Officer, Pax Africana is here to answer your questions on phone security and how to protect your phone.

First Thing is First | ROAD TO ANC ELECTIVE CONFERENCE

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has endorsed Zweli Mkhize to run for party president. They also endorsed Paul Mashatile for deputy president. KwaZulu-Natal went against former president Jacob Zuma, who on Tuesday again called for the ANC structure to endorse Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma instead.

• He has thrown his hat into the ANC leadership contest ring   by telling party branches on Monday evening that he was available for the position of national chairperson of the governing party.

• Zuma also made clear his position on the leadership race by endorsing his ex-wife Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma as party president.

• In a four-page letter dated 26 September, Zuma said he had been in consultation with leaders of the ANC who had sought his views on the conference and what needed to be done to rebuild the ANC.

• Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga have already endorsed Ramaphosa to retain his position. Western Cape, North West and Free State are yet to declare their favourite for the top position

• A total of 4,250 voting delegates are expected to participate and vote at the ANC’s December elective conference.

• KwaZulu-Natal, which has a total membership of 136,267, will send the biggest delegation to the conference, 877 delegates, followed by the Eastern Cape, with 684 delegates, and Limpopo, with 613. The Northern Cape will have only 239 delegates and the Western Cap 283 delegates.

First Thing is First | What to do if your phone gets stolen?

If your smartphone gets stolen, the damage may extend further than the loss of the device itself; a thief can cause much more harm with your banking apps, important documents, and personal photos and videos.

• The moment you realize you’re detached from your device, your thoughts will no doubt start racing. Where is it? Will I ever get it back? Will a thief be able to access its contents, including photos, videos, messages, and personal information? Unfortunately, the chances of actually getting a stolen phone back are slim. However, if you take the right steps before and after your phone is stolen, you can increase the chance of recovery and limit the damage.
