  • Advocate Tseliso Thipanyane, CEO of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC)

First Thing is First | The Human Rights Commission is probing the role of ad agencies in the publication of adverts that unfairly impair the dignity of South Africans. The five-day inquiry which started on Monday focuses on the production chain within the advertising sector to look at ways to eliminate racism and other forms of discrimination

    • In their submission The Institute for Race Relations (IRR) argues instead of worrying about the small number of racist advertisements, the country should instead concentrate on fighting unemployment, crime and service delivery.
    • Meanwhile, The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)'s Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said that more punitive measures should be implemented to deal with racism in the country.
    • According to Advertising Regulatory Board CEO Gail Schimmel.
    • Racism in advertising is caused by unconscious bias and tone-deafness.

  • Vhatuka Mbelengwa, National Spokesperson for the e-hailing industry

First Thing is First | E-hailing drivers are set to for a massive protest to entice the government to protect them from exploitation, industry tensions and criminals.

They are set for a protest on March 22, 23 and 24 to call on the government to assist them curb the exploitation by their app partners.

They say they are  tired of the government not intervening to regulate their "so called app partners" who subject them to cheap trips that leave them disadvantaged because of the little money they make.

The drivers were also going to ask for the government to put measures in place to root out industry tensions because as long as it does not intervene, e-hailing kills the traditional minibus taxi industry.

They also want the government to deal with this issue of safety decisively because these apps can be created in a way that they ensure the safety of the passengers and the drivers.

  • Aviation expert Phuthego Mojapele

First Thing is First | The SA Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA)  has indefinitely suspended Comair's air operator certificate (AOC) — effectively grounding Kulula.com and British Airways..

    • Thousands of passengers were left stranded and irate after the aviation regulator issued a 24-hour precautionary suspension of Comair’s air operator certificate on Saturday morning. The move comes after a series of serious safety incidents at the operator.
    • The SACAA said the suspension would remain, pending the operator addressing issues it had flagged.
    • Comair said in a statement on Sunday it was unable to confirm when it would start flying again.
    • A Kulula flight was forced last week to divert to Johannesburg's OR Tambo International airport from nearby Lanseria after an “engine-related” issue. This was the second such issue in three weeks on the same route.
