#TheTakeOffInterview| TRANSGENDER YOUTH AT HIGHEST RISK OF SUICIDE|

Despite growing global attention on and acknowledgement of gender diversity, young people who identify as transgender face an uphill battle for acceptance in the face of misunderstanding and misinformation, stigma, discrimination and bullying, putting their mental health and even their lives at risk.

Transgender individuals are at an increased risk of mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and substance abuse, with almost half of transgender adults having suicidal thoughts and nearly a third attempting suicide.

Similarly, transgender youth – already facing the physical changes and emotional turmoil of adolescence – are at high risk for mental illness and life-threatening behaviours. Studies have shown that more than a third of transgender youth have a history of self-injuring behaviours and a third report at least one suicide attempt.[iii] While almost one in ten teenage deaths in South Africa year is the result of suicide,[iv] the risk of suicide is even greater amongst transgender youth who don’t receive the support they need.

  • Landa Mabenge
Landa Mabenge is the author of “Becoming Him – A Trans Memoir of Triumph.” He is the founder and managing director of Landa Mabenge Consulting, which creates awareness of the transgender experience. He is the first known transgender man in South Africa to receive medical aid to finance his gender alignment surgeries.

#Phoner | Overall the LGBTQI+ community ( lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer , non-binary etc) experience significant discrimination, across many areas of life. These South Africans experience barriers to economic and social inclusion related to structural inequality and social stigma along multiple axes (e.g., race, sexuality, gender, sex) even with South Africa’s progressive Constitution
In the fight for LGBTQ+ rights on the African continent, South Africa leads the way for marriage equality and legal protection against discrimination. In fact it was the first country in the world to protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation and the fifth to legalize same-sex marriage.
On paper, this country is a haven for people like me, but there lies a stark contrast between the written policies and lived experiences.
What are the daily experiences and challenges of this community in SA today? How do you cope with being stigmatized? Do you feel safe? Do you feel accepted and included? Are you hiding your authentic self because you don’t feel safe? What are your real life stories?

  • Water and Sanitation Minister Lindiwe Sisulu
#Interview | Water and Sanitation Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has called on South Africans to embrace the Cuban engineers who have come to help resolve the country’s water infrastructure problems.
The government's decision to rope in engineers from Cuba instead of contracting local skills has drawn criticism from the profession and opposition political parties.
