Washington pot shops call on the state to improve protection from violent robberies with a bill designed to lengthen sentences for pot shop robberies.
Advocates told lawmakers that the swift uptick in robberies has put the industry in a crisis.
Until federal legalization or the SAFE Banking Act passes, cannabis will remain a cash-only business, drawing added risks for local small business owners.
There have been dozens of cannabis shop robberies in the last few months in western Washington alone. Some cannabis shop owners feel the state is not doing enough to protect their businesses.
Since law enforcement agencies handle the robberies, the Liquor and Cannabis Board said it is not always notified when a crime happens.
But rest easy because the state Liquor and Cannabis Board said it is communicating safety tips with cannabis retailers, including advice to:
*Hire armed security guards
*Make frequent cash deposit
*Post signs that staff don't have access to much cash
*Communicate safety guidelines with staff so they know what to do in the event of a robbery
My $.02 is that these violent robbers should be in prison, but if you’re going to pass a bill, how about you lobby the state capital for better banking laws so you can actually protect these businesses?

Major multistate #marijuana operators Cresco Labs (OTC: CRLBF) and Columbia Care (OTC: CCHWF) on Wednesday said they have agreed to combine in a blockbuster deal worth roughly $2 billion, with Chicago-based Cresco set to acquire New York-headquartered Columbia.
The combined footprint of the two companies would include more than 130 #cannabis retail locations across 17 states and the District of Columbia, reaching about 55% of the U.S. population.
The proposed all-stock #merger is one of the largest in the #cannabisindustry to date and would produce one of the biggest #MSOs in the nation.

Washington State, for example, had almost $1.5 Billion in cannabis sales last year, however sales figures have declined 6 months in a row, with the exception of a Christmas boost thanks in part to the holidays with the in-laws and New Years Eve.
What’s the Significance?:
Some analysts are claiming there’s a correlation between cannabis sales and COVID restrictions easing.
The theory is that people had more idle time at home during the lockdowns, with extra income from stimulus checks, so many of those people turned to cannabis products.
Now that lockdowns are over, the theory goes that those people are now using less cannabis.
So What Happened?:
Total Sales= $103.9
YOY Sales Growth= -7.0% (Sales growth topped 28% prior to Covid)
Avg Basket= $33.47
Basket Count= 3.1
Brand Concentration= 22%
Sales patterns were similar to other states, with declines starting right before the summer in May.
The Impact:
The prevailing theory of attributing lower sales to the end of the lockdowns might be part of the reason, however, I believe the impact of inflation can not be overstated.
The same economic factors hitting other business sectors are also affecting the cannabis industry. Cannabis sales aren’t falling just because people are trying to enjoy the outdoors, it’s also falling as inflation and gasoline prices are rising.
Inflationary Pressures:
Decreased average basket size trend continues, while the number of transactions continues to increase- indicating consumers are still going to #potshops more often, but spending less per transaction. This could mean consumers are trying to avoid higher minimum delivery requirements and opting to go to dispensaries and buying only what they need instead.
Consolidation:
Brand concentration has remained relatively steady, however, it's anticipated that consolidation will pick up as Canadian companies and private equity and venture capitalists come into the space in anticipation of U.S. Federal legalization to snap up under-valued cannabis prospects in hopes of a legalization rally that'll spark the next wave of cannabis stock speculation.

The edibles category looks a lot different in Canada than it does in the US. Among other differences, Canadian cannabis confectioners and bakers can only include 10mg of THC per package and must follow strict packaging regulations.
Gummies also are called “soft chews,” and the shape and wrapper of the edible must not appeal to children.
Brands are doing all they can to make edibles an interesting category in the hopes of attracting consumers who may be turned off these products’ dosage limitations.
Unique flavor combinations, cannabinoid ratios, and extracts are keeping innovation alive and well in Canadian edibles.

Is the U.S. cannabis industry evolving into a David-versus-Goliath confrontation?
A number of marijuana business officials and advocates characterize today’s cannabis industry as figurative warfare, pitting large companies seeking to dominate the market against smaller operators and entrepreneurs just wanting a foot in the door.
On one side are larger companies angling to become as profitable and dominant as they can.
On the other are smaller actors that want to break into the industry – such as social equity entrepreneurs, craft growers and the like.
The interstate-trade question is one of the biggest looming over the industry amid the possibility of federal legalization.

Beverages are continuing to perform successfully as a cannabis product category in both the US and Canada with distinct trends in both countries.
Since the launch of Beverages in Canada around January 2020, market share of this category has seen significant growth until reaching a peak of 2.1% of the total Canadian market in December of 2021. With a longer history of Beverages in the US, market share has experienced slower, more consistent growth in the US over the same time period.
The count of Beverage products has grown faster in California than any other US market. By the end of 2021, California had doubled their product offerings to just over 530 distinct cannabis Beverage products.
Segment shares are very different between the US and Canada. In the US, the largest Beverage segment is the Drops, Mixes, Elixirs, and Syrups, which made up 27.7% of total Beverage sales from January 2020 - January 2022. In Canada, Carbonated Beverages are the biggest segment, which made up 51.5% of sales during the same period.
As the Beverage segment matures in Canada, prices seem to be stabilizing for the products. In January 2020, Canadian Beverage products averaged at $16.21 per product. By January 2021, the AIP for Beverages in Canada dropped 146% to $6.58 per product. The AIP of Beverages in Canada has been stable since July 2020, hovering around $6 per product.
