The cannabis edibles market is expected to surpass $10 billion in annual sales by 2025. It is one of the fastest growing product types, consistently capturing the third largest share- of-shelf of all cannabis product types.

The maturing edibles category is starting to see some standardization. Large pack sizes increased in June while smaller sizes— like 5mg, 90mg, and 30mg—lost share of shelf.

The demographics is different than other potential purchasers with US edibles purchaser being younger, higher educated, and slightly higher income. They are also more likely to have children and be a woman.

The recent rise in inflation has been causing concern among economists and consumers alike. Some of us might be able to see the impacts of inflation at the grocery store, where our dollar buys us less over time, but what about in the cannabis space?

If inflation was heavily impacting the cannabis industry, we would expect that the prices of individual products would increase over time. We do not see that happening.

Short term, costs to build new facilities and equipment may rise as producers pass on higher commodity input costs, and higher energy costs could drive up indoor cultivation costs.

But if we enter a long-term inflationary cycle, cannabis is well positioned because the continued federal illegality of cannabis has led to excessive costs that provide cost-cutting opportunities regardless of inflation

While inflation has not been negatively impacting consumers in the cannabis industry, things may change. And since the cannabis industry has the tendency to move quickly, we will continue to monitor the space and keep track of pricing and inflation.

At the dawn of legalization in Washington State in 2012, Nick and Shawn didn’t know how life was about to turn upside down.

Colleagues at a gaming company, they came into the office and learned the business had been dissolved, suits arrived out of the elevator banks straight out of the matrix, and ushered everyone to the exits, file boxes in hand (except for Shawn who cleverly slipped his computer out the fire escape).

Pondering their next move, Nick, born in Eastern Washington, and 5th-generation Lebanese tells Shawn: “Look, the business right now is hashish and flower joints.”

Serendipitously, state cannabis licenses are still open for 30 days. Had their employer been sold one month later, or a few months earlier, the opportunity to start Sitka may not have been. As it worked out, the universe nudged a pair of friends to heed the call and take a leap into the unknown and embark on a new adventure.

Increased cannabis use over the pandemic further normalized the plant, with recent reports showing 91% of Americans are in favor of at least medical cannabis.

New recreational cannabis consumers are using marijuana more frequently than previously surveyed new users. 50% of new recreational cannabis users in Q4 2020 used cannabis 5+ days per week.

The portion of female cannabis users steadily rose through 2020, reaching 51% in Q1 2021. Women cannabis consumers skew younger and are heavier cannabis users than men.

The next step on the road to federal cannabis legalization in the US will likely be the SAFE Banking Act. The US cannabis market has been optimistic since the 2020 election. Currently, acquisitions are heating up in the US cannabis space. Companies across the supply chain in various states are purchasing other brands.

China is already recognised as the world’s largest hemp producer (growing more than two-thirds of the planet’s output), though it exports nearly all of that while strictly maintaining prohibition of high-THC cannabis. Following years as the USA’s main source of hemp imports, China is now being required under a new trade deal to buy a lot more of the nonintoxicating cannabis crop from the U.S.

China has domestically clamped down on CBD. In March, the country first proposed the notion of a ban, before its National Medical Products Administration banned cannabis compounds in cosmetics, including CBD oil and leaf. Products have been pulled from shelves in the clampdown, and the industry is starting to move elsewhere.

The overall policy seems to tolerate cannabis for export, but in no measure for domestic consumers. For the time being, China’s restrictive measures stand in stark contrast to those in Europe (where a mature CBD market has developed), and where obstacles keep falling as regulations are simplified.

While China seeks to limit the use of cannabis products in its home market, it may continue to ramp up production for foreign trade as with Europe. For so long as it chooses to, it will be missing a vast economic opportunity at home amid a frustrated market hungry for the benefits of CBD and other cannabis products.

Canadian adult-use cannabis sales grew by 86% to nearly $2.2 billion in 2020. BDSA estimates that total spending in Canada reached more than $2.6 billion in 2020.

Canada’s legal cannabis industry saw only limited, short-term negative effect from the pandemic in 2020, including an increase in physical retail share of total sales— nearly 90%.

Valuations of Canadian-focused operators are still trading at a premium on sales compared to U.S. operators, despite a smaller market and lower margins.

BDSA forecasts total legal cannabis spending in Canada to reach nearly $6.4 billion in 2026, rising at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16%.
