Different customers shop for cannabis differently during the holidays, but there are some clear trends that were observed from last year’s holiday season that can inform retailers and operators what to expect this year.

For example, during Christmas 2019 and in previous years, Edibles, Topicals, and Beverages sold more on average than the rest of the year. Interestingly, both Males and Females shopped similarly for Beverages and Edibles, but Male customers had a much larger increase in their average daily sales to Topicals than their Female counterparts.

Headset's reports tells us not only who was shopping and what they bought, but also how much they’re buying and when. Cannabis operators can also use this insight to help develop product development strategy and ensure they have enough products on store shelves to meet demand this holiday season.

The ongoing pandemic has caused extra stress for consumers, and despite the expense, many are not giving up their CBD during this time. However, with the closing of many retail outlet and stay-at-home orders in place, consumers turned to online outlets for CBD purchases in the first half of 2020.

From Q1 to Q2, the share of CBD consumers reporting online purchasing rose to 47%. As more brands offer easy-to-navigate website experiences, consumers will continue to make purchases online. However, consumers still have many questions about CBD, are exploring different product types, and are looking for expert advice that can be found in many brick-and-mortar stores.

CBD brands are always on the lookout for how new users are behind. With the world begging to t settle into a "new normal" in Q3, these trends are a strong leading indicator of what brands will need to be successful going into Q4 and 2021.

We look at 8 cannabis markets in North America and cover 5 key performance indicators from Headset's pulse check on the legal cannabis market including total sales, year over year growth, basket count, etc.

British Colombia saw 196% YOY sales growth, while WA & OR's more mature markets only saw 24% & 38% respectively. California's 2020 YTD cannabis sales exceed $342MM, 5.5X the size of Nevada's market.

Illinois customers spend the most- more than $100 per visit, 40% more than Cali. But, California's cannabis market is worth more than Alberta, British Columbia, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Nevada combined.

Consumers are not changing their product type preferences to a large degree. 21% of consumers now report reducing inhalable usage, while 35% of consumers indicated using more edible products, which appears to be less about harm reduction and more about variety and general usage increase.

Younger consumers are the most likely of all age groups to increase their cannabis usage, with 49% of Millennials saying they have increased cannabis usages. Not surprisingly, those already using cannabis 5+ days per week are the most likely to have increased their usage, with 52% doing so.

In March, 30% of cannabis consumers planned on reducing their cannabis spending. In July, 37% said they had reduced spending, but 56% had increased spending. 45% of all US cannabis consumers report switching from shopping at physical dispensaries to delivery or online ordering.

Coming off the dramatic decline of Canadian cannabis pubco stocks in 2019, it is little wonder that this sharp decline in fundraising and in M&A activity has characterized this year. Winners in the midst of the decline were real estate SPACs ad REITS offering sales-and-leaseback transactions as cannabis grew into a maturing industry where companies with accumulated assets could now access debt financing.

Hemp capital was also off by 78% during this period of oversupply with dropping CBD prices accompanied by numerous chapter 11 filings. While the experience in 2019 demonstrated the folly of overreach and speculative enthusiasm, the benefit has been the market maturation going on in 2020 – a period where not only fundamentals are dominating, but also where the future of the cannabis industry is becoming more and more apparent.
