The South African Local Government Association this week held a National Members Assembly in Ekurhuleni at the Birchwood Hotel which was attended by leaders and stakeholders in local government across the country. The main issue of the gathering was to look at what the vision of local government was, and what has transpired over the years.

Speaking at the gathering, SALGA’s President Bheke Stofile said that while remaining mindful and appreciative of the progress made by the sector, there should be a reminder that at the time of the development of the new democratic system of local government, certain policy assumptions were made as to what the system would focus on and how it would be resourced and supported.

President Cyril Ramaphosa yesterday (Tuesday) apologised for the delay in concluding lifestyle audits on members of the executive. He says that this was as a result of him intervening and demanding that the initial process be abandoned in favour of a more comprehensive process. He was responding to Parliamentary questions in the National Assembly where he said that the process is under way and he expects it to be concluded soon.

Cervical cancer is said to be the fourth most common cancer among women internationally. In South Africa is is said to be the second most common cancer among women between 15 and 44 years of age. Another fact is that more than 95% of cases of cervical cancer are caused by human papillomavirus. Doctors now say that men are not immune either and are also at risk of developing penile, throat, and anal cancer due to HPV.

The scourge of gender-based violence in our country
continues unabated. Every day in the news we hear of stories
of women being beaten or killed by their partners. Often we are
given stats around how many women continue to face abuse.
So this morning we hear straight from two women who will be
sharing their experience at the hands of abusive partners. It is
their experience that lead them to start an NGO in their  neighbourhood to help women and men who find themselves in abusive relationships.

The Human Sciences Research Council is currently
running the 20th edition of the South African Social Attitudes
Survey. The national survey measures the perceptions of the
public on a range of issues such as crime, service delivery, race
relations, poverty, etc. In it's latest round of data collection,
the survey seeks to ask participants about voter participation.
The questionnaire will look into the Democratic landscape and
the voting intentions of society. This data will form part of the
IEC's preparations ahead of the 2024 national elections.
