Do you ever wonder what the difference is between reading skills and reading strategies? So often the terms are used interchangeably but they are actually 2 different things that use different thinking skills, parts of the brain, and have different purposes in your students' reading.
In this episode of The Teach Joyfully Podcast, I have the skinny on what the reading skills and reading strategies are and the difference between these two groups.

Do your students seem to hear less and less of what you say? Are they always wanting to be "plugged in" to their own personal bubbles [headphones]? You're not alone!
Listening is fast becoming a lost art. We see it in our society and our students are no different than all the adults around them. So how do you remedy that in your classroom?
Today I've got 5 ways to teach your students to listen more effectively and build their listening stamina.

Raise your hand if you plan extensively for back-to-school success in the fall. That's pretty much every teacher, isn't it?! But do you put the same attention to detail into planning for your January back-to-school success?
So often we forget that our students are going to need similar supports in getting back into the swing of things in January as they did in the fall. It's not quite the same, but planning for retraining and building stamina still needs to happen after long breaks.
That's why this week's episode is all about how to plan ahead to set your students (and yourself) up for success in January and beyond.

How do you empower your students to learn to cope better and learn to self-regulate? We're all dealing with different forms of stress and even trauma these days. Students often show their stress in their behavior at school, sabotaging themselves and disrupting others. So how do we move forward and help our students do the same?
Join me as I chat with Dr. Michael Gaskell as he shares his wealth of knowledge to assist teachers and school administrators in helping students (and themselves!) navigate their trauma, build resiliency and make real progress all year long.
In this episode, find out more about the strategies that work, where to start, and how to stack strategies for maximum student growth.

Using text evidence is a skill all students should have to effectively talk about a text and explain their thinking. Yes, even in primary grades! Bold words but true nonetheless.
Let me ask you this...How often do your students answer a question about a character, the setting or something about a text and they don't know why or how they came to that conclusion? They have NO text evidence to support their thinking.
What about this one...Do you have students who have no idea where to find evidence in a text or even what text evidence is?
And one more...Does the idea of teaching your students to use evidence from the text to support their answers seem daunting?
Well, guess what? Being a story detective and learning to find and use text evidence is actually really simple and can be lots of fun.

I don't believe we can teach real reading comprehension through online programs and online apps. There are 5 key elements that impact your students' reading comprehension. And your students need you, their teacher, to model, guide, and help them learn to incorporate the skills in their reading. What real teachers do is so valuable that it simply cannot be replaced by programs and apps. So save those programs and apps as reinforcement AFTER you've your students have learned the concepts, skills, and strategies.
Listen in to find out what the 5 keys are.
