To know this group is to know the why. Starting with a family first approach, making it was one thing. With Ja established himself as a superstar in the league, the focus is continuing to build and move the game forward. Of any player in NBA history, none have had the journey quite like Gilbert Arenas. A connection to the game and love of competition started early, but he was largely slept on. He waited for his opportunity, and at every level, when he got his moment, he took over. When Agent Zero was at his peak with the Wizards, few players on the planet could touch his game. Then when injuries and controversies added up, Gilbert survived, but his playing days eventually wound down.

Thanks to his personality and high IQ, Gilbert has found his voice and second chapter in the new sports media space. Meanwhile, his son Alijah has emerged as an elite level player that cannot be denied. As a player, Gilbert’s game was spectacular. As a parent, he is both passing on that knowledge but also enjoying watching his kids embrace the game on their own.

Known as one of the toughest defenders to ever do it, Tony Allen’s game was a reflection of his personality. For the hard working, hard nosed and savvy kid from Chicago, his journey was one that nearly took him far from basketball. Coming up in Chi-town, the streets were as influential as the court, Tony had some help and good fortune to even get on a high school squad. Then he went the JUCO route before working his way up at Oklahoma State.

Drafted to an eventual championship team in Boston, with a Big Three that empowered Tony to earn his NBA stripes, he found his identity in the league. Then in Memphis, it was his turn to lead a special group in the Grit and Grind Grizzlies. Beyond his playing days, Tony made Memphis home and shares his perspective in the modern Grit and Grind, what his time as pro taught him and a unique perspective along the way.

The journey started from humble beginnings and a love of sports. For two brothers, Phil and Tee Morant, they tried just about anything competitive en route to a passion for basketball. That passion remained constant to the NBA world they walk in today. As we find out, Tee’s “GPS” for passing on the game from father to son was packed with skill, smarts and life lessons.

With what began as a dream, reality was right around the corner as goals were not only reached but exceeded. As athletes, both Phil and Tee had their fair share of hard knocks, wins and losses. As a family, they passed on their knowledge and desire to Ja as he found the game. Along with him was best friend, Devonte Pack, aka D-Tap, who has been right there for the competition, training and success as part of the family.
