  • Tehilim 90: Tefilah l'Moshe Revisited (Part 1)

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

Tonight (12/28/21) in our Tehilim/Tefilah shiur we revisited a perek of Tehilim we learned last year, by request. Last time we (a) rushed through the perek, (b) aiming to get just the big picture without understanding every nuance, and (c) without going through any single commentary. This time we intend to follow the method we've been using: slow, nuanced, and following either the Radak or the Meiri. Today we spent the entire time translating. Unless you find that process as valuable as we did, feel free to skip this one and wait for Part 2, when we begin our analysis.

  • Tehilim 149: The Ultimate New Song (Part 4)

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

Tonight (12/21/21) in our Tehilim/Tefilah shiur we set out to finish the perek. The good news is that we made some nice progress, thanks to Rav Hirsch's commentary. The bad news is that we didn't finish. At least, not to my satisfaction. I feel like we're 90-95% of the way there, but it just feels like it lacks that "Yeah! THAT's it!" feeling. As of now, our plan is to move on to a new topic on Thursday ... unless Hashem "uncovers our eyes and shows us wonders" from this perek. At least I'm happy with what we DID gain.

[Note: I believe that at some point in the shiur I might have said that this was Part 5. It's actually Part 4. I was confused because we canceled shiur one day.]

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

Tonight (12/16/21) in our Tehilim/Tefilah shiur we set out to finish the perek. However, we got sidetracked on a very important question about moshiach, Olam ha'Ba, and she'lo lishmah. This was a GREAT tangent and led to some nice ideas, but as a result, we didn't quite finish the perek - especially because the meforshim were relatively sparse towards the end. Our plan is to finish it this coming Tuesday, and then start something new.

Tonight (12/9/21) in our Tehilim/Tefilah shiur we continued our analysis of the perek we began on Tuesday. After reviewing our questions and the approaches we came up with last time, we began learning the Meiri's commentary. As predicted, his beautiful explanations shed light on both the ideas and the poetry in the text and helped us to develop our approaches. Next week we plan to finish his commentary and solidify our understanding of the perek.

Tonight (12/7/21) in our Tehilim/Tefilah shiur we began learning Tehilim 149. Although we initially found the pivot to be jarring and we raised a ton of questions on the particulars of the perek, we quickly develop a nice approach which fit in with our understanding of the surrounding perakim. Next time we hope to develop this approach and answer our questions with the aid of the meforshim.

  • Chanukah 5872: The Secret Theme of Al Ha'Nissim

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

FYI, this is being posted in my Machshavah Lab podcast because it's about a holiday and also in my Tefilah podcast because it's about tefilah. It's the same shiur, though.

This evening (12/2/21), in our tefilah shiur, we attempted to take a fresh look at Al ha'Nissim, and when we did, we discovered a major theme that had been hidden there the whole time. I'm not going to spoil the shiur except to say that once you see it, you'll (hopefully) never be able to look at Al ha'Nissim the same way again.

  • Why We Can't (and Shouldn't) Edit the Text of Davening (Part 4)

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

Q: Was this a Rambam Bekius chavurah or a Tefilah shiur? A: Both! This afternoon (11/29/21) I decided to "borrow" my Rambam Bekius slot to give a Tefilah shiur. We were scheduled to complete our current tefilah sugya this Tuesday, but I realized I'd be canceling that shiur on account of a Chanukah event that will take place in yeshiva. Since we were going to focus on the Rambam's shitah anyway, I figured it made sense to do so in our Rambam Bekius setting. Our goal was simple: to understand as much as we could of the Rambam's parameters for which changes in tefilah are acceptable and unacceptable. Although I can't say we figured EVERYTHING out, we managed to get the basics.

  • Why We Can't (and Shouldn't) Edit the Text of Davening (Part 3)

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

Last Thursday we went over four reasons why we can't (and shouldn't) edit the text of davening. In this evening's tefilah shiur (11/23/21) we went over six additional reasons, bringing us to a total of ten. Only at the VERY end of the shiur did we get to the question, "What are the parameters for when we CAN change the text of tefilah?" - but that'll have to wait until next time!

  • Why We Can't (and Shouldn't) Edit the Text of Davening (Part 2)

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

In this evening's tefilah shiur (11/18/21) we set out to answer the two questions we raised last time: (1) Why can't/shouldn't we change the scientifically inaccurate parts of tefilah to make them more accurate? (2) Why can't/shouldn't we change the text of tefilah in general? After a brief recap of Part 1, we learned FOUR answers to the first question, while also resolving a major NEW problem that came up in the process. I had actually prepared a fifth answer which I forgot about, so we'll have to save that for next time, along with at least a partial answer for the second question.

  • Why We Can't (and Shouldn't) Edit the Text of Davening (Part 1)

Have any questions, insights, or feedback? Send me a text!

In this evening's tefilah shiur (11/16/21) we set out to answer two questions that were recently posed to me in a Q&A format: (1) Why don't we change the scientifically inaccurate passages in tefilah to be more accurate? (2) Why don't we change the text of tefilah for other reasons if it would improve our kavanah? I naively thought I'd be able to answer both questions tonight, but we only got as far as laying the groundwork by going through the history and evolution of tefilah as presented by the Rambam. God willing, we'll answer both questions next time.
