In our fourth Tehilim shiur (12/3/20 at YBT), we continued our analysis Tehilim 146, developing the ideas we had last time and bringing them to a polished state.

In our third Tehilim shiur (12/1/20 at YBT), we applied our "Adler's Four Questions" and "Pivot Point" methods to Tehilim 146. This, too, should be a familiar perek, since we say it after Ashrei every morning. But in all of your recitations, have you noticed the pivot point? And if you did, have you thought about its implications? In this first shiur we develop a general approach to the perek. Next time we will refine it and bring it hope, God willing.

In our second Tehilim shiur (11/24/20 at YBT), we applied our "Adler's Four Questions" and "Pivot Point" methods (discussed in our "How to Learn Tehilim Crash Course") to Tehilim 23. Although this is a familiar perek, it proved to be a surprisingly difficult to crack. The smoothest approach I've found is that of the Ibn Ezra - albeit slightly modified, with help from the Rambam.

Tonight, in our first official Tehilim shiur (11/19/20 at YBT), we applied our "Adler's Four Questions" and "Pivot Point" methods (discussed in our "How to Learn Tehilim Crash Course") to the familiar Tehilim 92. We emerged with a nice idea, and saw the methodology in action.

Tonight (11/17/20) in YBT I gave the introductory session of a shiur in Tehilim I'll be giving on Tuesday and Thursday nights, instead of my Koheles class. In this "crash course" I go over some introductory points about Tehilim and present an overview of the three methods I use when learning Tehilim. Note that this is just a "crash course." The real learning begins on Thursday!
For a written version of this shiur, check out this article I wrote on my blog: https://kolhaseridim.blogspot.com/2018/06/how-to-learn-tehilim-psalms.html

Tonight's tefilah shiur (11/16/20 at YBT) was different. I found out last night that my great-aunt - Sister Susan, a Catholic nun - died from COVID-19 at the age of 93. Half an hour before the shiur my mom sent me a newspaper clipping from when Sister Susan retired after 44 years of service with the Sisters of Social Service (a convent which, during World War II, is credited with saving the lives of over a thousand Jews from Nazi persecution). This clipping contained a short quotation from Sister Susan about prayer. I decided to start our tefilah shiur tonight by discussing that quotation and its implications. This turned into a whole discussion about how we can improve our davening, and the discussion was very productive. I barely knew Sister Susan, but I am grateful that her words led to tonight's shiur.

In tonight's tefilah shiur (11/9/20 at YBT) we analyzed the mishnah's statement that "one should only daven from a state of submissiveness." We learned the Gemara in light of the context of the pesukim it cited and arrived at three possibilities for the type of submissiveness that the halacha requires.

We ended off last time with a bunch of questions on the (now obsolete) Hiskabdu Mechubadim Kedoshim. Tonight (10/26/20 at YBT) we attempted to answer those questions on behalf of the Rambam. We realize that these answers don't work according to most of the other Rishonim and Achronim, but we think that this approach is at least a reasonable possibility for the Rambam himself. I guess you'll be the judge of that!

Before we analyzed Asher Yatzar (i.e. the "prayer after using the bathroom") we thought it would be prudent to learn Hiskabdu Mechubadim (i.e. the "prayer before using the bathroom"). In this shiur (given on 10/19/20 at YBT) we learned through the main source, raised the major questions and problems, and then gave a rudimentary definition of malachim which only strengthed these questions. Hopefully we'll be able to answer them next time!
