Length: 1 hour 17 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (1/3/24), in our tefilah-focused Machshavah Lab series for women, we began a new series: an analysis of the berachos in the amidah! What, exactly, does this entail? That's what we spent the first 20 minutes of shiur discussing: how can we get the most out of our analysis, given our temporal limitations, and what should our objectives be? After we settled on 5-6 objectives, we translated the berachah, compared the standard nusach Ashkenaz with three old nuschaos, raised a ton of questions and problems, and did a quick read-through of the Abudarham. Next time, we will focus on the conclusion of the berachah in an attempt to understand the main idea, which we'll use to achieve our objectives (בג"ה).

Synopsis: Tonight (1/1/24), in our Wednesday night tefilah shiur, we took up a question that was sparked by a debate I had on Facebook about whether Hashem loves us unconditionally which, itself, was sparked by the popular Israeli song "Tamid Ohev Oti." We began with a surface-level analysis of the two berachos before krias Shema in which we talk about God's love for Israel, raising some basic and powerful questions. We then quickly familiarized ourselves with the source-pesukim cited by three Rishonic commentaries on tefilah. We concluded with a quick run-through of R' Hasdai Crescas's analysis of what it means to say that Hashem has "joy," "pleasure," and "love." Although we emerged with a working definition of Hashem's love, our REAL analysis will have to wait until next time, when we delve into the pesukim that form the basis of the berachos.

Synopsis: Tonight (12/18/24), in our Wednesday night tefilah shiur, we attempted to "land the plane" - or at least, to tie up some loose ends. After a brief review of last time, I tried yet again to say over the idea that my chavrusa and I came up with. Yet again, I don't feel like I did it justice. The good news is that we were successful enough in other aspects of our discussion to get some nice ideas. This was a difficult series, and there remains a lot more to be learned, but I'm glad we gave it a good try! My kavanah during Modim has definitely leveled up!

Length: 1 hour 14 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (12/13/24), in our tefilah-focused Machshavah Lab series for women, we attempted to understand the Rambam's view, as expressed in a pair of seemingly contradictory halachos. We learned through two commentaries on the Rambam who offered explanations: the Kesef Mishneh and the Yad Peshuta. Believe me, I didn't intend for these to be highly technical halachic shiurim (which is usually the type of thing I'd reserve for my Rambam Bekius podcast, not my Machshavah Lab shiurim), but alas - that's where we ended up. The good news is that we emerged with a clearer understanding of WHAT the Rambam holds. Next time, we'll delve into WHY the Rambam takes such a conservative stance when it comes to making change in the received nusach.
Please feel free to leave your questions, insights, and feedback in the comments!

Synopsis: Whoops! I forgot to upload last week's tefilah shiur. Last Wednesday (12/11/24), in our Wednesday night tefilah shiur, we continued our analysis Modim. After reviewing and refining what we covered last time, we attempted to understand the midrash cited by the Abudarham about how since we are alive and God is "alive," therefore, we should bow to Him. Our analysis was going well until I got up to the main idea ... and let it slip through my fingers. I just couldn't manage to articulate the insights that my chavrusa and I came up with. We still had a lot of nice ideas, but we didn't quite get there.

Synopsis: This morning (12/6/24), in our tefilah-focused Machshavah Lab series for women, we continued our exploration of the nusach ha'tefilah. After reviewing what we covered in Part 1, we busted what I call "The Big Nusach Myth" about "the original nusach" and how all the nuschaos we have today came about. We examined sources from Geonim, Rishonim, Acharonim, and academics. This insight led to a number of questions (and maybe a few cans of worms) which, בג"ה, we'll examine in the upcoming installments.

Synopsis: This evening (12/4/24), in our Wednesday night tefilah shiur, we continued our analysis Modim. After reviewing our updated translation, going over a few insights I accrued since last week, and examining three ancient nuschaos, we delved into the Abudarham's commentary on the first three words of the berachah. He made four points, and we made it through 3.5 of them (leaving one major question unanswered). Next time we're going to try to do a bekius run through the rest of the Abudarham so we can come up with a theory about the entire thing.

Synopsis: This evening (11/27/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim/Tefilah shiur on Erev Thanksgiving, we commenced our in-depth analysis of the blessing of thanksgiving: Modim! We began with a 15-minute review of my "MMMMMMM!" method of tefilah analysis. After that, we spent the rest of the shiur figuring out the reading and translation of the berachah - a task more difficult than people might imagine! Although we only barely had enough time to start our proper analysis at the end, we picked up on lots of ideas and insights along the way. Next time, we'll do some serious analysis, guided by the Abudarham.

Synopsis: Tonight (11/13/24), in our Wednesday night Tehilim shiur, we successfully "landed the plane"! Last time we ran through the Radak to get the big picture and I shared the core of my theory. This time we read through him at a more deliberate pace and then brought it all together by asking a key question: When should this perek be said? The answer to that question unlocked the main idea and purpose of the perek. I'm really happy with our this round of analysis went, and I can't wait to see what happens NEXT time we return to this perek!

Synopsis: This morning (11/8/24), in our tefilah-focused Machshavah Lab series for women, we began a new topic: the nusach ha'tefilah (liturgy). We began by reviewing the relevant facts: what the mitzvah of tefilah from the Torah entailed, how Ezra and his Beis Din changed it, and the historical reasons why. I then presented my understanding of the REAL reasons why tefilah desperately needed this change, which I supported by drawing upon Rav Hirsch's commentary on Migdal Bavel. We didn't have time to start the major question I had hoped to get to, which is: If Ezra and his Beis Din instituted a standardized nusach, then what is the origin of the wide variety of nuschaos we have today?
