The Tender episodes

  • The Tender

Dunmore, 1973. Nora Pike works nights as the tender of a swing bridge over the Marrow River, and no boat has blown for the draw in three years. Then, on a rainy Monday, a steam whistle sounds from the dark: one long, one short. She opens the span, and the river is empty. It happens again the next night, and the next. The old log books say it has happened before, always when the river runs high. As the flood rises, a sheriff's order to keep the bridge shut, and one last boat due on Saturday night, force Nora to decide what she owes the river. The Tender is a one-hour ghost story told in the first person, in six chapters. Listen in the dark, with rain on the roof.
