Episode Topic: How Our Shared Faith Has Guided Our Life, Our Professions, Our Family and Our Path Forward, Even in the Face of Personal Obstacles Like Blindness

During the fourth session of “Inspiring Conversations,” we will focus on the topic "How our shared faith has guided our life, our professions, our family and our path forward, even in the face of personal obstacles like blindness" through a conversation with our first couple, Paul and Cindy Karos. Paul had an extensive 30-year career in the financial industry, culminating with senior leadership roles at Piper, Jaffray where he was the President of Equity Capital Markets and is now active in ministry and coaching while Cindy has been active in ministry for over four decades and has also chaired several important new initiatives for her church.

The conversation will explore topics such as faith, grief, overcoming obstacles, purpose, and living a life of service. It will also allow the audience to engage in a meaningful question and answer session directly with Paul and Cindy.

During the third session of “Inspiring Conversations,” we will focus on the topic “Building a Winning Team” through a conversation with Muffet McGraw, former Karen & Kevin Keyes Family Notre Dame women’s basketball head coach. Over 33 seasons in South Bend, she hoisted the NCAA national championship trophy twice in 2001 and 2018 - becoming the sixth different women’s basketball head coach to win multiple NCAA titles. The conversation will explore topics such as team building, women in leadership, and life transitions. It will also allow the audience to engage in a meaningful question and answer session directly with Muffet McGraw.

This session of the Inspiring Conversations Series featured a discussion about effective leadership amidst duel pandemics with guest speaker Dr. Penny Wheeler, MD, the president and chief executive officer of Allina Health. This virtual event was led by Tom Schreier (‘84), the founding director of the Inspired Leadership Initiative. Through this discussion, Wheeler demonstrated ways in which leaders can navigate their large organizations throughout the challenges presented by the pandemic as well as the killing of George Floyd and the need for racial equity.

As our nation faces urgent calls for racial justice, many members of the Notre Dame family are seeking opportunities for meaningful conversations about equity. We are all hopeful that an honest dialogue can advance understanding and become a foundation for action. It is in that spirit that the Notre Dame Alumni Association Affinity Groups were pleased to present a collaborative shared reading experience sponsored by the Diversity Council, ND Women Connect, Senior Alumni, YoungND, Asian Pacific Alumni of ND, Black Alumni of ND, Hispanic Alumni of ND, and Native American Alumni of ND. In fall 2020, all alumni, parents, and friends of Notre Dame were invited to join the affinity groups in unpacking Black Domers: African-American Students at Notre Dame in Their Own Words, edited by Don Wycliff ’69 and David Krashna ’71, with a foreword by the late Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, C.S.C., ’39. Black Domers features 75 essays and profiles from Notre Dame alumni sharing their reflections and experiences across more than seven decades. This collection of stories was and will continue to be used as an important tool to spark dialogue and learning among members of the Notre Dame community.
