In this episode, I speak with Alfredo Borodowski on bipolar disorder, managing mania, how he has been treated by the media and positive psychology.

I am Alfredo Borodowski, Ph.D., MSW, “The Bipolar Rabbi.” In June 2013, I was arrested for impersonating a police officer. I was hospitalized and diagnosed with bipolar. In the ensuing weeks, I was fired as executive director of a prestigious institute and ridiculed by the press as “the Road Rage Rabbi.” My world collapsed. I then spent several months paralyzed on a couch with depression. But I persevered and thrived once again, becoming a social worker. A factor tipped the scale in my favor; I discovered Positive Psychology. Positive psychology studies the strengths that make us fulfill our potential. Knowing my strengths allowed me to overcome my negative thoughts and move forward.

My mission is to bring the wisdom of those with mental illness and their caregivers to society. Who knows better than us about courage, survival, darkness, uncertainty, and hope? We must end stigma by delivering our unique wisdom to the world.

Through my life experience and work as a coach, I tackle questions such as: “How to achieve happiness?” “Finding your key strengths for fulfillment?” “Is there a connection between the spiritual and our mental health? “How to defeat loneliness?

Recently I completed a book redefinig Evil. (The Roots of Evil - A Postmoderm Explortion of the Unintended Consequences of Civilization). The book was originally conceived as means to explain the failures of traditional psychotherapy. However after further investigation these factors are at the heart of evil doing since the begining of a history. It was/is important to promolgate these ideas at this point in our societies struggles.

The four facors are 1. Power over Behavior, 2. Binary thinking (Us vs Them), 3' Control of Information and 4. Simplistic Solutions to Complex Problems.

I have been a Professor of Graduate Counseling for over thirty years, I have been a practicing therapist for over forty years. My experiences have taken me to the Middle East where I worked with adolescents from Israel and Palestine. I have worked in clinics, hospitals, schools and jails.

In this episode, I speak with Sally Lotz about being a cult survivor, abuse, advice for someone in the same position and her family complexities.

★ Sally's Bio: ★

It took me a long time to find my passion and place in this world. I grew up in a well known doomsday cult, the Jehovah's Witnesses. I was kicked out of the house at age 16 for having a boyfriend, however, my step-father who was abusive (in all forms) was never punished or reported to the police.

I wrote a young adult novel (my 4th book) about it, called The Truth is a Lie. While the story is fictional, it's based on my life in the cult, and my family life - which sadly, is quiet common in the cult.
