In which Elizabeth-Jane and her mother take refuge in the modest Three Mariners inn, where the former’s willingness to assist the household leads to a chance encounter with the young Scotchman, Donald Farfrae. Meanwhile, the Mayor, troubled by his failing crops, seeks the stranger’s aid in restoring his wheat, and despite Farfrae’s fixed resolve to pursue distant fortunes, a mutual respect and tentative understanding take root between the two men.
