  • S2 Ep6 Matt Bentley (Ex MLS draftee)

    The sixth and final episode of season 2 is with Matt Bentley. Matt played for 4 years in the collegiate system (3 at West Virginia Wesleyan & 1 at Missouri State) before getting drafted by Minnesota United. Unfortunately, the MLS side did not choose to sign Matt after a few weeks of training which left him without options at USL level as roster spots had been filled. Matt has had no shortage of interest from clubs in Europe and in America and this coming season we are really looking forward to seeing him shine wherever he ends up.

Rhian's journey so far has seen her play for her national team, and then take the leap to America for a scholarship before playing professionally in France for a year. Now back in the UK, Rhian plays for the unique Lewes FC who are the first & only current club in football that are gender equal. We caught up with Leon before he flew out to Tokyo and we spoke about how the topics from The Long Win resonate with him. Leon's journey is special and a his path is one less traveled than many other athletes which has made for such a fascinating conversation and we are so grateful to Leon for giving up his time to discuss all things Long Win.

The book we have chosen for Season 2 is called the Long Win – the search for a better way to succeed and it’s written by Cath Bishop who is a 3 time Olympian, a former diplomat – specialising in conflict-affected parts of the world like Bosnia and Iraq, and Cath also works in the business world acting as a coach and consultant. Cath’s wide range of experiences in sport, international relations, and business have formed what is an absolutely incredible book that you have to read. We hope some of what is discussed in this episode challenges your thinking and beliefs and sparks some discussion with others and potential change.

    This weeks episode is with current Stevenage footballer Chris Lines. Chris has amassed over 500 appearances in the football league and won 5 promotions so far. We loved the insight he gave into different team cultures at the places he has been & the reasons behind some of those environments being more beneficial towards any success they experienced. We covered the games in front of 30,000, the Wembley appearances, the cup ties against some big boys & so much more. What a guest!

  • S1 Ep4 Cam Foulkes (Creator of Inside the Mind & DRFC age group coach)
    In this episode Cam provides us with a different spin on topics from the book as he gives us insight into his experiences playing football & now coaching at the academy level. The past few years have unfortunately given us some tragic stories about ex-academy players who have tried to, or committed suicide & Cam's twitter and Instagram account @_InsideTheMind1 gives some really raw and in depth stories from players who have experienced the academy environment. Each story is different but there are some common themes from what Cam posts and it is well worth checking it out and helping him spread awareness of the difficulties that these young people face. 
    We explore team, club and some organisational identity in this podcast and we really hope that you enjoy it; there's so much to take from this and we thank Cam for giving up his time to come and spread the word on a topic that is so relevant right now and needs more attention.

    Episode 3 is a corker if we do say so ourselves! Sean had a great playing career for multiple clubs before transitioning into coaching. Now a first team skills coach at Bristol Bears, Sean talks us through his journey & his experiences in a number of different team environments. From his signing for Bristol for next to nothing, to now coaching and helping Bristol's homegrown talent and world-class stars Sean provided us with excellent insight whilst making us all feel like we could relate! 
    Exploring Sean's views on team togetherness & different team cultures was an absolute pleasure, we are so grateful to him for giving up his time.
