  • 053 Making a Big Difference with Tiny Blessings with Becky Kopitzke

My guess is that most of us would fall into one of these categories... We see all of the extreme need in the world and desire to make a difference, but either our double-booked schedule or the thought "what could I do?" keeps us from reaching out. Yet changing the world begins right at home and works its way out and can be as simple as a smile. Today I'm joined by Becky Kopitzke, author of Love Because, as we talk about how we can get unstuck and unstoppable to change the world one tiny blessing at a time.

    Listen in to learn:

    • What blessing others does for us
    • How tiny blessings can rescue relationships
    • The “me-weeds” that keep us from loving others
    • Why loving-in-action can be difficult
    • How blessings can take just 5 seconds
    • Favorite Verses:

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” - John 13:35

“Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.” – 1 Peter 4:8

      Favorite Quotes:

“You can feel love for someone, but actually never express it. When it is expressed and it is exchanged it shores up a relationship.” – Becky Kopitzke

“God is only asking us to use what He’s given us already to be a blessing to others.” – Tiffany Jo Baker

    • 052 The Struggle with Our Thought Life with Sarah Geringer

Maybe your mind keeps replaying something a teacher said about you back in school. Maybe you tend to be a “the glass is half empty” type of gal. Maybe mentally you are your own worst critic. You wouldn’t be alone. According to the National Science Foundation, an average person has about 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day. Of those, 80% are negative and 95% are repetitive thoughts.

If this is the case, then there is no wonder that many people suffer from anxious or racing thoughts, negative self-talk, worry, and overthinking.

Today Sarah Geringer and I are going to tackle The Struggle with Our Thought Life. Sarah is a speaker, podcaster, and author of Transforming Your Thought Life: Christian Meditation in Focus.

      Listen in to learn:

      • The power that thoughts have in our lives
      • How our actions are products of our thoughts
      • Why a negative thought life can be such a struggle
      • How to re-train and gain control of our thoughts so they can work for us
      • Favorite Verse:

“Set a guard over my mouth, Lord.” Psalm 141:3a

        Favorite Quotes:

“Our actions start with thoughts first.” – Sarah Geringer

“I learned to take control of my thoughts by replacing them with scripture.” – Sarah Geringer

“If the Bible talks about having the mind of Christ, then that’s something that we all need… and that’s something that comes through spiritual disciplines and our choices.” – Tiffany Jo Baker

“When we are able to have the word of God hidden in our heart… that’s what comes out of us when life hits.” – Tiffany Jo Baker

      • 051 The Comparison Struggle with Heather Creekmore

You know how it is… a woman walks into the room, posts on social media, or shows up at the PTA meeting and we immediately look her up and down, make assumptions, and begin to make comparisons between her life and ours in our head. I’m not sure how or when that ever started, but the struggle is real.

Today we tackle The Comparison Struggle with Heather Creekmore, the author of The Burden of Better: How a Comparison-Free Life Leads to Joy, Peace, and Rest. Heather has been featured on Fox News, Huff Post and more, but she's best recognized from her appearance as a contestant on the Netflix hit show, Nailed It.

        Listen in to learn:

        • Tactics for dealing with comparison
        • The dangers and effects of comparison
        • How comparison is really envy
        • What a comparison vs grace-filled life looks like
        • How grace is the answer for comparison and envy
        • How the hustle to chase vain idols and goals doesn’t really satisfy
        • Favorite Verse:

“Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love.” Jonah 2:8

          Favorite Quotes:

“We can compare our bodies, our husbands, and what 40 looks like on her and what 40 looks like on me and it is never going to look the same. In the process we lose out on a lot of things and things are stolen from us when we compare.” – Tiffany Jo Baker

“I’m trusting that You, God, have equipped me with everything I need physically to accomplish Your goal for my life.” – Heather Creekmore

          • 049 The Struggle with Self-Care with Amanda Runnels

We are facing a national mental health crisis that has the potential of causing chaos for years to come. The 2020 Stress in America report shows that nearly 8 in 10 Americans have said that the current pandemic is a significant stressor in their life. This along with politics, economy, healthcare, natural disasters, schooling issues, and more have resulted in an uncertain future. The stressors have resulted in high levels of reported negative behavior, tension in their bodies, “snapping” or getting angry quickly, unexpected moods swings, and yelling at loved ones.

Like never before we need to learn how to care for our spirit, soul and body. Today, I am going to tackle the struggle with self-care with one of my BF’s IRL Amanda Runnels, the coach and champion for whole-istic Christ-centered health behind the blog Unrefined Junkie.

            Listen in to learn:

            • Indicators that what you are doing for self-care isn’t working
            • Simple budget and time friendly self-care strategies
            • Favorite Verse:

“So God’s rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God.” – Hebrews 4:6

              Favorite Quotes:

“Our body will yell at us…if we aren’t hearing the whispers of needing to stop and take care of ourselves.” – Tiffany Jo Baker

            • 048 The Struggle with What to Do with My Feelings with Jessica Hottle

We have thought for a long time that most human emotions fall within the general categories of happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear and disgust. In 2017 a study from UC Berkeley challenges this long-held assumption and found 27 distinct categories for emotions. Triggers and stimulus in our world lead us to experience a rollercoaster of emotions every. single. day. Emotions lead to our feelings. These feelings can show up in so many ways…So, what do we do with all of these feelings? Today I tackle what to do with all your feelings with Jessica Hottle, podcast host and best-selling author of Face Off with Your Feelings: Break Up with the Lies From Your Past and Embrace the Truth for Your Future.

              Listen in to learn:

              • The difference between emotions and feelings
              • What causes our emotions and feelings
              • If we have any control over what we feel
              • The easiest place to intercept the trigger>emotion>feeling>reaction cycle
              • An example of a real world trigger to reaction cycle
              • What the Bible says about our feelings
              • Favorite Verse:

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Philippians 4:8

                Favorite Quotes:

“I have to renew and rewire the beliefs I carry about the pain, that I carry about my life, about this situation, this circumstance.” – Jessica Hottle

                    • 044 The Struggle to Be Heard with Susan Hoekstra

Have you ever been in a situation where your words were misunderstood? What about a text that didn’t land right or a co-worker that didn’t hear your heart in a matter? We’ve all been there and experienced the struggle to be heard, understood and validated in a very noisy world. Today I'm joined by my friend Susan Hoekstra, the author of A Firm Grasp: Feeling Validated in a Notice-Me World as we discuss The Struggle to Be Heard.

                      Listen in to learn:

                      • What validation is and why we can’t live without it
                      • The 8 different listening styles
                      • Why being heard is priceless
                      • How mercy is wrapped up in all of this
                      • The difference between venting and lamenting
                      • Favorite Verse:

“In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.” – Psalm 18:6

                        Favorite Quotes:

“We have so much stimuli coming at us and we need somebody to just listen, to just hear and be present with us.” – Susan Hoekstra

“We’ve all had those moments when our heart and message have fallen flat… and if we have that experience too much, a wound can settle.” – Tiffany Jo Baker
