This episode is brought to you by Eight Sleep. Temperature is one of the main causes of poor sleep, and heat is my personal nemesis. But a few years ago, I started using the Pod Cover, and it has transformed my sleep. It fits over your existing mattress and cools or heats each side of the bed independently. I run hot. My lovely partner tends to run cold. With the Pod, we each get the temperature we want. No more fighting over the thermostat.
Eight Sleep has launched their newest generation of the Pod: Pod 6, with a temperature-regulating Hub that is fifty percent smaller than Pod 5 and fits under most bed frames. The thermal engine reaches your set temperature twenty percent faster, so the bed is ready when you are. And the cover embeds nine times the biometric sensors—tracking heart rate, HRV, and sleep stages with no wearable. This episode is brought to you buy ProLon! One name that has come up on this podcast more than once is Dr. Valter Longo, a USC professor with decades of peer-reviewed research on fasting, nutrition, and aging. I regularly fast and have done a lot of experiments with fasting over more than a decade, and it has been one of the most incredible unlocks that I have found for both near- and long-term physical and mental health.
But fasting can be really hard, and that is why Dr. Longo, best known for the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD), developed ProLon. For 5 days, you’re able to get the benefits of fasting—including autophagy, your body’s cellular, self cleanup process—all while eating real, structured, plant-based meals. In scientific studies, 5-day cycles of the Fasting Mimicking Diet improved markers tied to metabolic health and biological aging and helped people drop fat while holding onto lean muscle. And ProLon makes it easy: it comes in one box, everything is clearly laid out, and there’s no guesswork. For a limited time, Prolon is offering my listeners 15% off sitewide, plus a $40 bonus gift when you subscribe to their 5-day program. Just visit ProLonLife.com/Tim.

“If I told you there was a plant that you could take that gave you a slight lightness of being, a slight kind of skip in your step, a sense of well-being that eliminated all these sort of existential little neuroses that we all suffer as conscious beings, and it allowed you to focus at task, whatever that creative task was, whether it was a spinning of wool or the writing of digital code, and you could sit at task all day long concentrating on task with immense focus, with no sense of being under the influence of any plant, nothing as harsh as a second cup of coffee, and you found yourself at the end of the day ready to go home, have dinner, and do it all over again the next day—the truth is that coca has this capacity to improve our lives.”
— Wade Davis
“[Coca is] as important to that [Indigenous Andes] population as peppermint and chamomile are in European medicine. It’s their major medicinal plant.”
— Andrew Weil
“Coca has been used in South America by virtually every culture of the Andean and Northwest Amazon for 8,000 years. And during that time, there’s been no evidence whatsoever of any toxicity, let alone addiction.”
— Wade Davis
“In coca, there are 14 alkaloids. Cocaine is one of them. They all have similar chemical structures, and none of them have ever been studied. Once we isolated cocaine from the leaf, everybody lost interest in everything else.”
— Andrew Weil
“Coca is to cocaine what potatoes are to vodka.”
— Wade Davis
“As the anthropologist Catherine Allen said, to deny people coca in the Andes is not like denying the Germans beer or the British tea or the French coffee. It’s actually an act of cultural genocide because you cannot be runakuna, you cannot be of the Andes, of Pachamama, if you do not use the leaves.”
— Wade Davis
“I think that coca is the most perfect example of how we’ve gone wrong in our relations with the natural world, really failing to see that plant for what it is, confusing it with this one component of it, and then getting ourselves in enormous amounts of trouble.”
— Andrew Weil
“I feel that liberating coca is the final act of my professional life. I feel that very sincerely.”
— Wade Davis
Want to hear another episode that untangles the curse from the blessing of coca? Listen to this one with ethnobotanist Dr. Mark Plotkin about the 8,000-year history of the coca leaf, the varieties of coca and their uses, coca-leaf bonding among the Kogis of Northern Colombia, surviving altitude sickness in the Andes, the adventures of Richard Evans Schultes, ayahuasca and shamanic knowledge, the biocultural conservation of the rainforest, and much more.

“These machines will be smarter than us. They will want to survive. And they can be deceptive, they can obfuscate, they can go behind your back, pretend they’re doing one thing and then actually do another. All of this has been shown in all the tests of the models. “We only need to be ahead for the next couple of years, because by 2028 we will get to recursive self-improvement, where the frontier model codes, by itself, the next frontier model, and progress just goes vertical.
Longo, best known for the Fast Mimicking Diet (FMD), developed ProLon. For 5 days, you’re able to get the benefits of fasting—including autophagy, your body’s cellular, self cleanup process—all while eating real, structured, plant-based meals. In scientific studies, 5-day cycles of the Fast Mimicking Diet improved markers tied to metabolic health and biological aging and helped people drop fat while holding onto lean muscle.

“What I want the world to understand is that we are standing right now on the precipice of a revolution in genetic medicine.” — Jake Becraft
Jake Becraft is the CEO and co-founder of Strand Therapeutics, a company building one of the most advanced programmable genetic medicine platforms in biotechnology. Under his leadership, Strand is redefining what RNA medicines can do by enabling cell-selective targeting and therapeutic payload delivery inside the body, unlocking a new class of precision genetic therapies. He has guided the company from its founding vision through platform development and into clinical translation, positioning Strand at the forefront of next generation RNA therapeutics.
Beyond his role at Strand, Dr. Becraft is an influential voice in the national biotechnology landscape. He engages and advises policymakers, defense leaders, and industry stakeholders on biosecurity, innovation strategy, and strengthening American competitiveness in advanced biotechnology. Trained as a synthetic biologist at MIT, he operates at the intersection of science, entrepreneurship, and policy, focused on building both the companies and the institutional frameworks required to secure the future of programmable medicine.
He received his Ph.D. in Biological Engineering and Synthetic Biology from MIT. He serves on the board of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) and the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council (MassBio).

“Our goal at Strand, and our challenge, is building drugs today that impact patients’ lives. We’re not a research institute. Our goal is not to do really cool research on mice and join the ranks of people who have cured mice of cancer. There’s millions of them. There could be a Nobel Prize every five minutes for someone who’s cured a mouse of cancer. Our goal is to cure human beings of human-being cancer. Our goal is to cure human beings of human-being diseases, and do so in a safe, effective, scalable way that impacts a person’s life as little as possible. And that is what we’re building.”
— Jacob Becraft
“What I want the world to understand is that we are standing right now on the precipice of a revolution in genetic medicine.”
— Jacob Becraft
“Everyone wants to cure cancer. I don’t need a story behind curing cancer. I just need a story about how we’re going to get there and how curing cancer is actually going to be one step on the road to solving disease writ large.”
— Jacob Becraft
“What we are in the midst of right now is the United States massively losing to China. China has built an industrialized version of clinical trial infrastructure for first-in-human trials that is so efficient and massively quick that they’re just able to go faster and cheaper into the thing that matters most, which is first-in-human trials. So the United States is actually in the process of very rapidly, as a country, falling behind China because what started as a place for American companies to come run clinical trials to get data and then take it to the FDA and then do larger trials in the United States has now created a flywheel structure within China where now just Chinese companies run their clinical trials faster than the American companies and then bring their Chinese-discovered drugs to the United States.”
— Jacob Becraft
“No one will learn until they care.”

“The biotechnology industry will be dragged kicking and screaming into the future, or it will be built up in a new way from new players.”
— Jacob Becraft
“If some bullshit hype filters into this, it’s worth it in order to take the correct swings at the truly big ideas, because one out of 10 transformations is better than seven out of 10 logical steps forward.”
— Jacob Becraft
“In low odds games, games where there’s a very low odds of success statistically, if you don’t go 100 percent all in, the odds will be zero.”
— Jacob Becraft
“When I look at some of those great investors who have made these high-conviction bets, it seems like they’re able to identify this moment in time for companies that is post-conviction, pre-consensus. The ones who know we’re post-conviction, we’re no longer saying, ‘Can we do this?’ We’re like, ‘Oh, my God, this is going to work.’ But it’s pre-consensus because not everyone has caught on yet or not everyone is convinced.”
— Jacob Becraft

“The biggest secret is saying no to 99 percent of the things that many people consider ‘normal’ so what you care [about] gets done.”
— Sami Inkinen
“Truck drivers, their concept of a lunch is McDonald’s. We can’t tell them, ‘Oh, here’s the list. Go shop Whole Foods or Erewhon, and then go home and cook at home.’ It’s like, ‘Okay, McDonald’s it is. We’re going to reverse your diabetes on McDonald’s diet.’ And by the way, we do that.“
— Sami Inkinen
“The adherence of Virta patients, again, which are real Americans, not Samis, real Americans, is twice as high at one year as taking a GLP-1 drug. We have 83 percent adherence retention of patients at one year. And look at any of the publicly available data: people stick to GLP-1s like 40 percent, maybe 50 percent, 30 to 50 percent.”
— Sami Inkinen
“GLP-1s 100 percent affect your appetite. They change how much you eat, so you eat less, but they alone don’t change what you eat. … And if you don’t change what you eat, you’re not going to be perfectly or even optimally metabolically healthy.”
— Sami Inkinen
“Type 2 diabetes can be reversed systematically, not miraculously. And so hopefully I can be a messenger of hope that these conditions are reversible, especially after I already disclosed that I used to live thinking it’s your fault, it’s your fault, you are just lazy, you don’t have the willpower. But that’s not true. Nobody gets these things because they’re lazy or they decide. It’s because of our food environment. And the food environment kind of slowly but surely poisons us. But if you know a few little tricks and changes, you can actually turn back the clock.”
— Sami Inkinen
“The love language of American capitalism is dollars. And so when you can help someone else to make money, you’re going to be very, very successful.”

“I believe that everybody can improve. So it really doesn’t matter for me [if it’s] cerebral palsy or not. If it’s chronic fatigue, it can happen. If it’s fibromyalgia, the progress can happen.”
— Jerzy Gregorek
“[If] we exercise without mission or purpose or goals, we can exercise for 10 years and never change.”

“With cerebral palsy, I think that the focus is not athletic focus. The focus is to comfort them. So not really improve them … just to comfort them so they have the safe life and they are okay, I guess. That’s probably the difference here.”
— Jerzy Gregorek
“I saw the connection between the squat, the bench, the numbers, the words, the beliefs, and philosophy. I saw connections everywhere, and I created the challenges, the hard choices, every time, everywhere. For me, bench pressing, going from 100 pounds to 102 was not different than knowing what is 15 plus 17.”
— Jerzy Gregorek
“With cerebral palsy, they have different conditions, different beginnings. The most important [thing] is to find where is the beginning. Where to start is one of the major things because usually I think that we want too much. It’s not going to happen. So we need to find this very tiny thing.”
— Jerzy Gregorek
“We have to remember that we are facilitators. We are not really cultures that created the powerful human being. That powerful human being actually created themselves. And we have to create a place where it’s athletically aligned with athleticism and not care only.”
— Jerzy Gregorek
“[Tae Jin’s father and mother] were worrying all the time what will happen if they die, what will happen if something happened to them. Now they don’t have to worry anymore. Tae Jin is completely independent. He’s in college, for Christ’s sake! Just imagine that. And a lot of that, I believe, 100 percent, that can happen with everyone.”

This episode is brought to you by Our Place’s Titanium Always Pan® Pro. Many nonstick pans can release harmful “forever chemicals”—PFAS—into your food, your home, and, ultimately, your body. Teflon is a prime example—it is *the* forever chemical that most companies are still using. Exposure to PFAS has been linked to major health issues like gut microbiome disruption, testosterone dysregulation, and more, which have been correlated to chronic disease in the long term. This is why I use the Titanium Always Pan Pro from today’s sponsor, Our Place. It’s the first nonstick pan with zero coating. This means zero “forever chemicals” and a durability that will last a lifetime. That’s right—no degradation over time like traditional nonstick pans.
This pan combines the best qualities of stainless steel, cast iron, and nonstick into one product. It’s tough enough to withstand the dishwasher, open flame, heavy-duty scrubbing—even metal utensils—without losing any of its non-stick properties. Go to FromOurPlace.com/Tim and use code TIM to get 10% off sitewide.
This episode is brought to you by Matic! Readers of The 4-Hour Workweek know I love automation. Anywhere I can “set it and forget it” is a win and gives me more time for the things I enjoy. That’s why I’m such a fan of Matic. As their tagline goes, “the world’s most advanced floor cleaner.” Matic learns your home and runs quietly in the background. It vacuums, mops, docks itself, and doesn’t strangle itself on charging cables or get wedged under your couch. I put out a note on social asking how people liked it, and the response was overwhelmingly positive.
The Verge writes, “This WALL-E-like bot fixes the stuff every other robot vacuum gets wrong.” And Wired says it’s “the best robot vacuum we’ve tested, and it scored a rare 10 out of 10.” Both Silicon Valley legend Naval Ravikant and Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke love theirs and are investors, and my friend Kevin Rose has been raving about his. Go to MaticRobots.com/Tim today and experience the closest thing to a house that cleans itself. New customers get free bags for a year.
