The Parallel Four Book One Part One Chapter One

Writing The Parallel Four has been a journey in itself—a walk through memories, dreams, and all the little moments that shape who we become. Some parts of this story are true. Some are truer than I’d care to admit. And some—well, let’s just say they’re inspired by what might’ve happened if life had taken a different turn.

The characters you’ll meet in these pages—Stephen, Johan, Vinka, Marlin, Tim, and Petra—are fictional, but they live and breathe with the spirit of real people I’ve known, loved, and lost. Their world is stitched together from scraps of real places, actual events, and a few wild yarns that got better with each retelling down the pub.

Poplar, Hitchin, and the snowy reaches of Sweden aren’t just backdrops—they’re characters in their own right. They’ve shaped this story as much as the people in it. And if you happen to recognise a place, a turn of phrase, or a certain kind of mischief from your own youth… well, consider that my nod to you.

This first book takes us from scraped knees to stolen kisses, from playground politics to life’s first real goodbyes. It’s about growing up, making mistakes, and finding the people who’ll stand by you no matter what—even if they sometimes drive you round the bend.

To those who remember the ‘50s and ‘60s—this one’s a memory jogger. To the younger lot—it’s a peek into a time when life moved slower, but feelings still ran just as fast.

And finally, to Stephen, Johan, Vinka, Marlin, Tim, and Petra—six hearts bound by the wonder of first love. Not the fleeting kind that fades with time, but the rare and lasting kind that deepens, steadies, and endures—a love that grows with them, becoming part of who they are, and who they will always be. And though this is only the beginning, the road ahead will test them in ways they cannot yet imagine—through training, through battle, and through the choices that will shape the rest of their lives.

The Parallel Four, A Chronicle of friendship, love, war, adventure and destiny.

This story follows the lives of four people born on the same day on 20th December 1956, Stephen and Johan were neighbours in Poplar East London, they were best friends, at the same time Vinka and Marlin were neighbours in Ellios in Sweden. Vinka was Johan’s cousin while Marlin was her best friend.

Stephen and Johan from the age of seven spent their summers and Christmases in Sweden with the girls, as they grew up they became very close. All through their school days all four were very bright children and top in all their classes, they were all good at languages by the time they left school, they could all speak English, Swedish, Latin, French, German, Arabic and Spanish.

Stephen was five foot ten tall with blue eyes and brown hair, Johan was also five foot ten with blue eyes and blond hair, meanwhile Vinka was five foot ten tall with blue eyes and blond hair, Marlin also five foot ten with blue eyes and brown hair. All four of them were extremely good looking.

When they left school the girls joined the Swedish Army in the Intelligence Service as their National Service for one year then they worked for a translating company enabling them to work remotely. Military training for the defence of the Swedish nation and its country is not just a duty but a democratic right. With the catch-phrase of 'one man - one rifle - one vote' the Swedes gained a full parliamentary system at the beginning of this century. Any aggressor should know that a united people stands behind the key words in the political declaration that 'we will, we can and we shall defend ourselves'.

The boys joined the Royal Marines after gaining their green beret they were posted to 40 Commando, where they did two tours of Northern Ireland, two winter exercises in Norway and a Mediterranean exercise in the summer. They married the girls after their first tour of Northern Ireland. They did the first UN Cyprus tour and got the medal having stayed on for a few months to help out 42 Commando.

They left the Royal Marines after four years and transferred to the British Army joining the Royal Anglian Regiment, they were posted to Berlin and had quarter next door to each other. The boys did a promotion course and were promoted to Lance Corporal, later in that tour of Berlin the did Junior Brecon and promoted Corporal. Each couple had twins born on the same day in June 1979, a boy and a girl each.

They then were posted to the Depot The Queen Division as section commanders for two years, they brought their own houses in Hitchin just after arriving. They were posted back to the Battalion in Colchester. They did a tour of Northern Ireland as section commanders before going on to do Senior Brecon and promoted Sergeant The Battalion had been posted to Celle, Lower Saxony in West Germany for at least five years, after the move they did another tour another tour of Northern Ireland as Sergeants before being posted back to the Depot as Platoon Sergeants. When Johan and Stephen returned to the unit in Celle redundancies were being offered.

The girls had joined the TA Intelligence Corps and were attached to C Squadron 21 Special Air Service in Hitchin, while keeping up their translation work. They did a tour of Northern Ireland with the regular SAS and received the General Officer Commanding Northern Ireland Commendation for their work, they then did lots of other work with the regular SAS. In their spare time they brought and did up old racing motorbikes. All four were great Telemark skiers and became instructors. The also gained all their sailing and cruising instructor qualifications.

Arriving back at the Battalion they were offered redundancy and left the regular army. The boys then did selection for the TA SAS, passed and badged. They did many courses and exercises and in 1991 all four of them went on the first Gulf war with 22 SAS and the

This is the life that could have been if he had not died,

A few hours after he was born.

I entered this world on a 20th December 1956 to the sound of Elvis Presley singing ‘All Shook Up’  on the radio, closely followed by the hushed voice of a concerned nurse.

Having been shook up and whacked on the backside I was introduced to my mum.  For just a few tormented hours I lay cradled in her loving arms.  I felt the familiar beat of her heart and the new sensation of fresh warm tears as they landed on my sallow face.  For a brief moment I was aware of light and shade and through blurred vision could make out the shape of the face looking down into mine.

Moving, seeing, hearing, thinking, feeling and breathing, all felt confusing and exhausting to me, so I ceased participating in any of those actions and returned to the blissful state of sleep.

My surviving brother throughout his young and also adult life had vivid dreams featuring myself, it was as though I were still alive but in a parallel universe, the story was written of my life, had I lived.
