“DAMN THE VALLEY” was a phrase regularly uttered by the men that spent any amount of time in the Arghandab River Valley during the deployment of 2 Fury to Afghanistan in 2009–2010. The valley has claimed bodies from the troops of Alexander the Great, the British Empire, and more recently, the Russian Army. Operating in the valley was like nothing the men could have envisaged, they called it the “meat grinder.”

It was a deployment that the media didn’t talk about, and the government doesn’t acknowledge. Three of the company were KIA, more than a dozen suffered life-changing injuries, and half the company had Purple Hearts—not many modern-day deployments have a 52% casualty rate. At one point, the entire prosthetics ward at Walter Reed was full of the men who patrolled that deadly area of the world.

Since their return, many of the survivors have struggled to move on with their lives, and the unit has been declared at "extraordinary risk" by the Department of Veteran Affairs. No one who entered that region was left unscathed. This book shares the perspective of the men that were on the ground for that deployment during the fighting season of 2010.

  • Art for the Heart Dr. Kathryn Vecchio

Send Tim a message about this episode

As the executive director of The Vecchio Group, Art for the Heart, Kathryn Vecchio has witnessed firsthand how using art in groups significantly positively impacts mental health.

Kathryn always had a passion for art, helping others, and understanding oneself. It’s like the great artists gave her messages throughout her life. While in college, Kathryn saw a statue of Socrates. The inscription said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” This moment was profound in Kathryn’s life, and because
of this moment, she has helped and continues to inspire others.

Kathryn is a solutions-oriented individual and a big fan of sustainable change with high standards, so her peers take her findings seriously. Her impressive credentials include a Master of Science in educational psychology/counseling and human services from Texas A&M University and a Bachelor of Science from Baldwin-Wallace College. She also received a Doctor of Ministry from Trinity Theology Seminary and has an Integrative Medicine Health Coach Certification from Duke University. She is licensed to practice in North Carolina and is a member of the North Carolina Psychological Association, the American Association of Christian Counselors, the National Italian American Foundation, and the American Society for Training and Development.

Kathryn's unique take on using all art forms to tap into the client’s creativity is brilliant. She is
using art to encourage creativity to gain access to different perspectives on any given issue; this
helps heal those dealing with mental health issues.

In art therapy, Kathryn exposes her clients to painting, literature, drama, dance, and even the
culinary arts. Going through the creative process allows the client to arrive at their epiphany or
change of perspective without interference from others. Kathryn is known for her compassion,
encouraging nature, and well-organized process. She believes that art informs the process and
helps the client imagine a new life, but without igniting the creative process, the client stays
stuck. And she has proven this by her list of clients she has helped using this process.

Kathryn was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio.  She has  two grown children, Jacob and Sarah, and a Pomchi named Sergio the Wonder dog.  Her hobbies include painting and spending time with her family.

  • Toxic Family: Transforming Childhood Trauma Susan Gold

Send Tim a message about this episode

    Susan Gold is magical.

Navigating a ferociously challenging upbringing while bravely moving forward as an adult to face ingrained, outdated, and patriarchal programming head-on, Susan now shares a unique perspective in viewing life challenges as occasions for transformation.

Through her book, Toxic Family: Transforming Childhood Trauma into Adult Freedom, Susan turns the standard paradigm on its head courageously leading others through her own journey of abuse, addiction, and surviving narcissism all while creating a distinctly empowering personal and professional life.

LONG A BIO: Susan Gold was raised in a challenging and chaotic family system, the middle child of five. To fully thrive, she bravely chose to meet the demons of her upbringing that were continuing to repeat. Her book, "Toxic Family: Transforming Childhood Trauma into Adult Freedom" is about that journey.

Professionally, Susan became known for attaching celebrity talent to projects in NYC which led her to produce for television and film and on to Los Angeles. She convinced modern art legend Andy Warhol to do an on-camera commercial for Pontiac, a talent deal American TV personality Donny Deutsch still claims as one of his best, helped launch Fox News Channel at the request of Chair, Roger Ailes, and on behalf of Disney Channel persuaded A-list celebrities including Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Taylor Swift, David Beckham and more to be interviewed by cartoon characters…Phineas & Ferb.

Susan is a decorated endurance athlete competing in three marathons, and dozens of triathlons and has the distinction of finishing third in her age group at the treacherous Escape from Alcatraz event.

After living with force on both coasts of the United States, Susan heeded an intuitive call for a quieter life and now resides in the northwest corner of the mystical state of Montana with her beloved partner and their pets. Keen on leaving a legacy to help others heal from challenges she’s successfully met, Toxic Family: Transforming Childhood Trauma into Adult Freedom, is part of that quest. With the same magic Susan created in her entertainment career, she is now leading retreats, webinars, workshops and private sessions to help others drop outdated storylines and programming in exchange for living from the heart in authentic freedom as adults.

Supporting homeless animals, especially dogs, and cats, and helping others up the ladder are her joys. Her pride is her son, a political science major at the University of the Pacific.

  • Everyday conversations regarding Mental Health Helen Morris

Send Tim a message about this episode

Helen Morris is a certified Emotion Code and Body Code based out of Rotorua, New Zealand.

She came across this healing modality after tragically losing her 18-year-old daughter, and only child, in a motor vehicle accident in 2017.
Prior to this she worked in the health sector in Health Intelligence, supporting general practices in Hawke’s Bay with national health initiatives and programmes. From 2009 to 2013 she developed and coordinated an award-winning Before School Check (B4SC) screening programme for 4 year-olds, which she also supported at a National level, and contributed to two publications evaluating the programme. In 2012 she was nominated for a leadership award for her contributions locally and nationally to this programme.

“There are times in life which are so momentous and pivotal you cease to be the person you were! The loss of my beautiful Tahl Kaleish was one such moment. In the space of an hour I went from being a proud mama of an 18 year old taking on life boldly, to someone who had to learn how to exist without the most important person in her life. This lead me to look at life with a completely new set of lenses from that moment forward.

Helen also launched a podcast called The Beautiful Side of Grief in March 2021 - featuring guests who have moved through heart-wrenching loss or those who are at the coal-face supporting this process. It diverse, heart-warming, though most of all it is positive and filled with go-to's that anyone can use.

In this series we will be exploring all aspects of mental health looking at suicide, PTSD, wellbeing, cancer, bereavement, physical and mental wellbeing, care for the carer, self preservation, relationships and any other factors around the subject.

Send Tim a message about this episode

I've helped OVER 50 people transform their physical & mental health.

My ultimate goal is to help transform other people’s lives from their mind to their bodies no matter their fitness goals. Whether you want to gain muscle and strength, burn fat, do a body recomposition, or simply just gain more flexibility and mobility I want to help you become an even BETTER YOU!

What Made Me Decide to Help People?

When I saw my grandfather and a close family friend pass away due to serious health problems due to cancer and unhealthy eating habits I knew I didn't want the same exact thing to happen all over again to the people I know and love (from my friends, family) and even to the whole entire world population! I figured I'd take it upon myself to help transform people's lives one body at a time and to ultimately help transform the world!

What Got Me Into Fitness and Nutrition?

When I was 15 years old I saw my younger brother lifting weights which helped inspire me to do the same. I also wanted to get a 6 pack and had a STRONG desire to want to live longer and just be healthier in general. My old ways of eating whatever I laid eyes on and sitting around playing video games just didn't cut it for me anymore and I wanted to make a SERIOUS lifestyle change! The rest is history!

The Tim Heale Podcasts S3 E181 Dave Albin

Dave Albin was born in 1954 at Queen of Angels Hospital in Hollywood, California to a single mother.

He was adopted by his Aunt & Uncle on his mother’s side at the age of 5. His adoptive parents told Dave they were not his parents at the age of 11.

Later that year both his adoptive parents started drinking.

This is where Dave’s life took a hard turn.

Dave tried alcohol at the age of 11. By the time he was 14 he was experimenting with hard drugs.

Grossly addicted to drugs and alcohol he joined AA some 20 years later in June 1988.

This is when Dave was introduced to the personal development industry. He attended a seminar with Tony Robbins in 1995 where he did his first firewalk.

Dave went on to work for Tony Robbins for just shy of 20 years as Tony’s Firewalk Captain.

Dave retired from the Anthony Robbins Companies in 2014 shortly after GOOGLE hired him to put on an event for them.

Firewalk Productions, LLC was born in 2014.

Dave has done gigs for NASA, Heineken, The Entrepreneurs Organization (EO), RE Max, Chick-fil-A, Pruvit, Google, NI, NC Chiropractic Association, Isagenix, Heineken, Boone, Blowing Rock, Ashe and the Caldwell County Chamber of Commerce, Wayne Dyer, T Harv Eker, CRISP Video, Y.M.C.A., NATE BAILEY, Tony Robbins and many others.

Dave currently lives in the Appalachian Mountains in Ashe County North Carolina.

Dave is the #1 Firewalk Instructor in America.

Firewalking is a 1,000 year old rite of passage ritual where you literally walk across hot burning coals.

Having worked for Tony Robbins for 19+ years and starting Firewalk Productions in 2014 Dave has firewalked hundreds of thousands of people. He and Tony Robbins set a World Record in London in 2005 walking over 12,300 people.

His success has a scary and violent past. On June 8th, 1988 he put a gun to his head to stop the excruciating pain from both drug and alcohol addiction.

2023 will mark 35 years of sobriety.

Dave's clients include Googe, NASA, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, Heineken, RE Max, Entrepreneurs Organization (EO), Chick-fil-A, CRISP Video, Mystery Hill, Y.M.C.A., Replace Your University, Tony Robbins, T Harv Eker, NATE BAILEY, The 4-Seasons, The Omni Hotel, The Waldorf Astoria, Waikoloa Hotel, and MANY others.
