Your job is not to provide more average, your job is to produce great work. Your job is to create something that only you can create. By doing your work, you want to make a living that will provide for you and the people you serve.
In seeking our way of life and our pursuit of purpose, we often times try to add more. We want to add more services and more dishes on the menu and more work vans and more cutting edge techniques.
There is always room for improvement and there is always a demand for innovation. But maybe that innovation doesn’t come in the way of adding more. Just maybe, innovation comes in the way of taking what we do and finding a way to make it better.
Almost always, the answer is to cut your menu back and focus on ten dishes and make them superb. Make those ten dishes expensive and make them in a way that is unique to you. Make the experience one that is memorable. Serve people with your art and they will never forget you.
The same is true with accounting and contracting and marketing and law.
This is how you make yourself completely indispensable. You solve a problem that other people can’t solve. You find a way to make something with so much value that people depend on it. They will keep coming back for more.
Better yet, they will talk about you.
When people talk about you, it’s because you created something worth talking about. What is it that they are gong to say?
That’s up to do to decide.
