Last night, President Biden secured a historic hostage trade deal with Russia, requiring complex international negotiations. Reportedly, this deal has been in the works since before Biden withdrew from the race, proving that he has the experience and political acumen to get the job done, even though he was ill. We listen to some of Biden’s remarks, in which he emphasizes the roles of other world leaders and families of the hostages over his own.

At the bottom of the hour, Cracked.com writer Keegan Kelly comes back to share more of his entertainment expertise, with a focus on Peter, the protagonist of the hit movie. Office Space is a satirical take on toxic office culture that has stood the test of time, but one of Kelly’s latest articles on Cracked takes a different stance on Peter’s struggles. Perhaps Peter actually has it a whole lot better than most of us! We also take your calls on whether it’s better to work in an open office or a cubicle.

In Wisconsin’s third congressional district, three Democratic candidates are running against Derrick Van Orden. Van Orden has a horrible track record full of MAGA support and outright bullying of colleagues, women, and children. The Democratic primary is likely coming down to business owner Rebecca Cooke and State Rep. Katrina Shankland. In the past few weeks, the campaigns have been exchanging blows on topics such as “dark money” and voting records. While he is very supportive of Shankland’s legislative history, Todd believes that Cooke is in the right, and that her campaign is only guilty of doing a better job connecting with the people of the third district. At the end of the day, why are these campaigns squabbling when they could be focusing on defeating Derrick Van Orden? Tune in for Todd’s take.

BREAKING NEWS: As of a virtual DNC roll call this afternoon, Kamala Harris has officially gained enough delegates to secure the Democratic nomination for President. Todd briefly explains this process. Civic Media News will continue to cover this development.

Yesterday, former President Donald Trump attended a conference with the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). Ultimately, they asked fair questions, and Trump refused to answer them directly. The event ended early as soon as Project 2025 was mentioned. Luke provides his perspective. 

At the bottom of the hour, Nick Ramos returns to the show! As the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, he has his finger on the pulse of politics. Also, as a Black man, he has a lot to say about Trump’s remarks at yesterday’s NABJ conference. Donald Trump now claims that Kamala Harris used to be Indian and has now “turned black.” Nick Ramos contends that either the former President is gaslighting, having memory issues, or both. 

Afterward, Nick and Luke talk about Wisconsin’s upcoming primary election on Tuesday, August 13th. Early in-person voting has already begun! Here in Wisconsin, Andre Jacque is running in our 8th Congressional District, and his campaign just released a new advertisement. In this ad, Jacque is depicted as a heavyweight boxer, but really, it just makes him look even more weird than he already did. 

Kamala Harris’s campaign continues to pick up steam. She addresses issues that affect all Americans. Meanwhile, Donald Trump compares himself to Elvis and can’t distance himself enough from Project 2025, despite his past endorsement. He and his running mate JD Vance insult Harris at their own rallies, but refuse to debate her. She has responded with a classic line: “if you have something to say, say it to my face.”

As we all know, Todd is a huge fan of Secretary Pete Buttigieg and believes that he would make an excellent Vice President. After talking with Luke Mathers last hour and reading some of your texts, Todd clarifies his position on who Kamala Harris may pick for VP. In short, while Buttigieg is a dark horse pick, the far more likely candidates are Josh Shapiro, Mark Kelly, and Tim Walz. Todd covers the pros and cons of each. 

At the bottom of the hour, Todd shares a message from sci-fi writer and founder of the American Liberal Party Kevin Gaughen. As Americans, we need to focus on the bigger picture for this election and stop picking fights about small issues. Democracy is on the ballot, and even if we disagree about most policy issues, anybody willing to vote for Kamala Harris is our ally.

The election season is just heating up, and MAGA is only getting weirder. Todd shares some audio from recent TV appearances with us. First, we go over Donald Trump’s recent speeches and an interview on Fox News. He is making a call to Christians, claiming that they will never have to vote again after this election because “it will all be fixed.” The autocratic signaling could not be clearer. Also of note are Trump’s uncertainty about whether or not his wife loves him and his statement that he is not a Christian. 

Afterward, we pivot to a clip of Secretary Pete Buttigieg on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. In a succinct and relatable manner, Buttigieg addresses J.D. Vance’s claims that Americans without biological children “have no physical stake” in our country’s future. Buttigieg served in our military in active war zones overseas, which brings a whole new level to physical commitment.

When it comes down to it, neither political party has been historically willing to dedicate the time, energy, and massive amounts of money necessary to solve our immigration system. Any simple blanket solutions are woefully inadequate and likely to cause more harm than good.

Over the last few days, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has been making the rounds on news outlets. Between CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and others, he’s laid down the facts in a firm and respectful manner. Secretary Buttigieg has been a champion of Vice President Harris’s achievements, simultaneously playing up just how strange MAGA Republicans are. Todd breaks down the new emphasis on weirdness in Democratic messaging with a focus on Secretary Pete. 

If you’ve heard any of Donald Trump’s speeches lately, you’ve likely heard him ramble about “the late, great Hannibal Lecter,” a fictional serial killer and cannibal from the movie The Silence of the Lambs. Trump refers to Lecter at least once per speech as of late, accompanied by an admission that people don’t like when he does it. Todd has a hypothesis on why Trump has this obsession. Does Donald Trump recognize that asylum seekers have nothing to do with “insane asylums?” Todd doesn’t believe so.
