The Tongan Legends Podcast

In this episode we retell a treasured ancient story of a boat of Gods from Maama (the world) that go to Pulotu (the domain of High Goddess Hikule'o) and the challenges they faced there. From these challenges we learn more about the nature of Kava drinking as well as the origins of talo (taro) and 'ufi kahokaho (a very special type of tuber yam).

In this episode we explore a less well known story and discuss its important relation to Tongan culture today.

Welcome back to another Tongan Legends episode where we are blessed to have the presence Indigenous Scholar and Anthropologist, Maui Tā-Vā he Ako Dr. Tēvita O Ka'ili.

We get into the great story of the Mauis and their contribution to the creation of Tonga, and how they still impact Tongan culture today.

We continue the creation story or Tonga and talk about the first Tangaloas and the islands they created. We also discuss the creation of man in Tonga and how that creation story defined much of Tongan society today.

Havea Hikule'o, one of the highest ranking and most powerful members of the Tongan pantheon. We discuss this Goddess, the islands in Tonga she is said to have created, her domain of Pulotu, and its effects on Tongan Society today.

Where did the fahu system come from?

Were Tongans thousands of years ahead of the scientific world in understanding the creation of the earth?

Listen in as we tell the Tongan creation story and talk about what it might mean.

What is the Tongan Legends Podcast and why are we making it? We (Ulise and Ngahauoma) take the time to answer those questions and introduce ourselves and the podcast in this episode.

Side note - We originally planned, and mentioned in this intro, to drop the intro and first episode on the same day but the intro will be up a few days before the first episode drops.
