The wind wouldn’t let up, the bunkers wouldn’t blink, and we loved every second of it. Our Carnoustie round became a masterclass in patience, club selection, and keeping your head when a pot bunker is daring you to lose it. We came for the history—Hogan’s Alley, the Van de Velde burn, the toughest finishing stretch in golf—and left with sore faces from laughing, wiser swings, and a deeper respect for a course that rewards nerve over noise.
• why Carnoustie’s layout is relentless yet fair
• how wind changes lines, yardages and spin
• bunkers as true penalties and how to avoid them
• short par four strategy on the third
• hickory club swings and tempo lessons
• Spectacles at 14 and the toughest mile home
• Van de Velde’s legacy and the psychological test
• honest score talk and embracing experience over ego
• Paul’s 600-course quest and rankings context
• fundraising for Parkinson’s and kidney research

A wee dram on the first tee, sea air in your lungs, and a fairway that seems to help your ball find grass instead of trouble—some days hint they’ll be special before you’ve swung a club. Our 50th milestone took us to Dumbarnie Golf Links, where hospitality and modern links design come together in a way that made us ask, out loud: is this the best golf experience in Scotland?

Carnoustie doesn’t host championships so much as it interrogates you. We tee up our most anticipated round yet with a blend of lore, strategy, and honesty about what it takes to survive the toughest mile in golf. From Hogan’s Alley to the Barry Burn, we map the decisions that separate a tidy bogey from a card-wrecker, and we share the member insights that reveal where the real trouble hides.
*****
our gracious hosts Paul & Barry are attempting to play all of the golf courses in Scotland for charity - if any cause is dear to your heart as both of these causes were close to Nish's heart - you can donate here -
Paul raising funds for Parkinson's
Barry raising funds for Kidney Research
*****
Three hosts set the stakes for Carnoustie, mixing humour with hard truths about a course that demands precision, patience and humility. We revisit the legends and the scars, share local insight, and explain how a net-score mindset can turn survival into satisfaction.

• Van de Velde’s collapse unpacked and lessons drawn
• Hogan’s Alley, Barry Burn and the ruthless closing stretch

It's our very Unashamedly Pro-European Ryder Cup Preview!
What are your predictions?

• European team has strong experience with McIlroy entering his eighth Ryder Cup
• Recent wins from Fleetwood and McIlroy remove potential psychological barriers
• America's home advantage balanced against having several Ryder Cup rookies
• European team camaraderie contrasts with American individualistic approach
• Beth Page Black's difficulty requires accuracy, potentially favoring Europeans
• First session will be crucial for momentum and confidence
• Luke Donald's captain picks show determination to win on American soil
• European prediction: winning by 2 points (15-13)
• Team culture differences may be decisive in pressure situations

Gullane Golf Club delivers a magical links experience, leaving us completely in love with the course and facilities as we explore the self-described "Village of Golf."
• Driving to Gullane provides immediate immersion in golf with courses lining both sides of the road
• The club features two clubhouses - the historic Members' Clubhouse and the newer Links Clubhouse built about 10 years ago
• Dylan, the Sales Manager, showed us their exceptional facilities including a top tracer driving range and new starters pavilion
• Gullane's visitor philosophy treats guests as "members for the day" with exceptionally friendly service
• The course layout works with natural land that predates golf, creating a simple yet brilliant design around a single hill
• Bernard Darwin's "most beautiful place in the world" at the top of Gullane hill offers stunning views of the course, ocean and Edinburgh
• The par threes provided good scoring opportunities despite requiring solid strikes
• Chris shot an impressive 87 (16 over) while Nish carded a 97 (26 over)
• The 17th hole offers a spectacular view as you play back down toward the village at golden hour
• Gullane features three distinct courses with No. 2 designed by Willie Park Jr. and No. 3 known as "the gem of the club"
• The club has earned the Gold Flag award from the 59 Club for five consecutive years

We discover that Hankley Common Golf Club delivers a stunning golfing experience that exceeds expectations and counters our fears about tight fairways and punishing heather. The course proves to be not only playable but absolutely beautiful with its purple heather, pristine white sand, and immaculate fairways.
• Ranked 58th in UK and Ireland, but feels like it should be ranked higher
• Fears about difficult heather and narrow fairways were unfounded
• Clubhouse is classy and welcoming with excellent facilities
• Par 3 7th hole is potentially one of the best we've played
• Course borders the Skyfall estate from the James Bond film
• Despite being recently aerated, the greens played well
• The course features more elevation changes than photos suggest
• Fairways are much wider and more forgiving than expected
• The heather in August creates stunning purple framing of holes
• We rank it in our top three courses played so far
