Loretta was just 26 years old—a proud Inuk woman and a university student in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was passionate about advocating for missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, and she was actually writing her thesis on that very topic. It was more than just a project to her; it was personal.

But in February 2014, Loretta went out to run a quick errand and never came home. Two weeks later, her body was discovered in a hockey bag, tossed off the side of a highway in New Brunswick. The reason behind her murder is devastating, and it’s a loss that still weighs heavily on the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Loretta was known for being warm, courageous, and determined. She was living with her long-term partner while subletting her own apartment to help cover her school expenses. The last time anyone saw her, she was headed to that apartment to either collect rent from her tenants or evict them if they couldn’t pay.

What happened next shocked her community and sparked a wave of activism that continues to this day. Loretta’s story is one of resilience, heartbreak, and a fight for justice that didn’t end with her tragic death.
