This commandment is concerned with the truth and is protective in its prohibition against false testimony in the community of covenant.  Thereby protecting the ability of the community to carry out justice.  It also protects the reputation of the members of the community from slander, which is destructive.  The moral dimension of this commandment also points us to the giver of the commandment who is Truth eternal God.

God’s care for his creation is reflected in his ordering of relationships which serve to reflect his divine character and care.  This is especially visible in the covenantal relationship with his people and in the ordering of their relationships with one another.  This is a hinge commandment between the two tables and carries implications that are far reaching.
