  • Business Lunch III: The Psychedelic Arms Race ft. Shelby Hartman

It's a beautiful day in Topanga Canon. The breeze is blowing, the birds are chirping, and as we wait for some extravagantly priced breakfast burritos we're joined for Business Lunch by psychedelic media icon Shelby Hartman. After some of the hottest months in psychedelic capitalism to date, there is much to discuss, and with such special company, no location would be more idyllic than the breathtaking Inn of the Seventh Ray. Despite Kai’s ill timed and quite frankly unprofessional digestional distress (gross) we make the most of our afternoon as we reflect on our president making quips about trying Ibogaine in the Oval Office, the implications of the largest pharma company in the world purchasing ATAI Beckley, and the consequences of drinking unfiltered water from a stream in a fire ravaged canyon.

  • Cocaine XR: The Ballad of Pablo Pledgescobar [Preview]

We're giving you a taste, a beautiful bite, of what Trip Report Report Reserve listeners are calling a delectable auditory meal. For our first ever Reserve episode, we're exploring aa scandal from an esteemed educational institution of the far east: Penn State. It appears some naughty fraternity boys have been caught up in something of a cocaine trafficking scandal. Oh dear! Later in the episode we explore cocaine use while everyone else is on shrooms and at a "low-grade" strip club probably somewhere in the UK.

  • Cocaine Part 6: One Last Line

Over the last hundred years, cocaine has morphed from a glitzy Hollywood indulgence, to the drug of choice for tens of millions of people worldwide. We discuss the last hundred years of cocaine's history — with no shortage of side quests and indulgences of our own. Later in the episode we cap things off with a report from a very responsible drug user in Las Vegas, and a singularly awesome Erowid poster. Finally, we're giving an update on our mission to get enough podcast reviews that Cheth's Dad will allow us on his yacht (don't call it a boat) for the end of the summer season in St. Barthes.

  • Cocaine Part 5: Crack, Contras, and the CIA

Many of us have heard some version of this story, often oversimplified and misconstrued by Hollywood or the mainstream media, content to ignore primary sources in favor of demonizing the drug user. The truth as told by those who lived it goes like this.

In the early 1980s, the CIA coordinated cocaine trafficking operations in order to fund a violent paramilitary group attempting to topple the Nicaraguan government. A significant portion of that product was sold to enterprising drug dealers at bargain prices who processed it into crack, bringing devastation to LA's South Central neighborhood and beyond.

Between August 18th and 20th 1996, Gary Webb published a groundbreaking series of articles titled Dark Alliance, which shed light on this whole affair and brought millions of people to the same conclusion.

On the 30 year anniversary of this historic exposé, we're discussing Webb's findings in detail, outlining how and why the CIA trafficked cocaine into the United States, the key players involved in the explosion of the crack trade, and the devastating repercussions for black communities nationwide.

  • Cocaine Part 4: OTC Odyssey

We’re back with Cheth to discuss the first ever FLINTA trip reporter in the Western Cannon… Annie C. Meyers

At the turn of the 20th century, Annie was a wealthy society woman living in Chicago when she came down with a head cold. She procured some OTC medication du jour, "Dr Birney's Catarrhal Powder," unaware it contained mostly cocaine. Far from healed, Annie found herself blown into eight years of active addiction, and narrowly avoiding a deadly sanatorium fire!

Later in the episode, we begrudgingly dust off a flagrantly racist (redundant) New York Times article that influenced the passing of one of the United States' first drug prohibition laws, setting the stage for a torrent of racialized drug rhetoric to come. Plus, did we mention Cheth is back?

  • Cocaine Part 3: Cheth Meets the Fiends

Let's just start by saying, you’re welcome. We’ve heard your clamoring, and never expected things would move this fast but… we got the Big Dog in the house and he's off the leash (BARK!)

Thats right folks its Kai, Max and the one and only Cheth in studio, talking about some of the 1st fiends ever reported, including the good Dr. Charles Bradley (no relation), who in the 1880s began a long lineage of men charged with familial neglect in the court of public opinion due to, well, Cocaine.

Cheth enlightens us as to the origins of his maternal family's great fortune, offers some harrowing details about his *former captain's imprisonment in French Polynesia, and give us an exclusive on an exciting partnership with 2028 Presidential Candidate Gary !

Then we explore a journalistic expose on the Boston Drug Store in Chicago, where women were free to buy Schneef “over the counter” at all hours of the night, engaging in such depraved behavior as singing songs, appearing joyful, and getting a moment's reprieve from whatever nonsense they were dealing with back then.

FYI DON'T bring up Maven, the boys are fighting.

  • Cocaine Part 2: Pharma, Freud, and at Least Four Friedrichs

Cheth and Maven can talk forEVER about the Roman Empire, but Kai’s barely even heard of it. We talk about what we know best and this episode, that’s the origin of what would become Big Pharma, and the many Friedrichs who made it all possible (plus one classically coked up psychoanalyst).

We chart Merck Pharmaceuticals' initial rise from its inception in the literal dark ages, and discover how a few young marketing dudes at Parke-Davis would create the blueprint for medical marketing, setting off a disastrous chain reaction still felt today. When Max was their age, she'd just learned what "boundaries" were! Then we take a deep breath before diving into everyone’s favorite mama’s boy who, it is said, loved a little bush.

  • Cocaine Part 1: I'm in Love With the Coca

We’re back in a BIG way, taking you to a time before posh-goth ravers would bashfully ask for a bump on the dancefloor. In this episode we explore the coca leaf’s nearly 10,000 year history before being synthesized into the crystalline form known as Cocaine.

We begin with high in the Andes Mountains, reading from an account of a coca laden llama fertility ritual, led by members of the Atacameño. Then we do our darnedest reciting funky verse poetry from the 1600's, and get into a trip report from an unhinged Italian doctor who would have traded ETERNITY for a little more time with “this little bush” ;)

About The Trip Report Report

From the publisher's feed

The history of psychoactive drugs and the people who use them. One substance at a time, hosts Kai Marsella and Max Mindel combine deep historical research with appropriately unhinged first-person trip reports – drawing on genre pioneers like Thomas De Quincey and anonymous Erowid posters alike. Strap in for a sonic journey, from ancient coca rituals in the Andes to the mysterious workings of the Earth Coincidence Control Office and beyond.
