Publisher's Summary:
Keith Mabbut is at a crossroads in his life. A professional writer of some repute, he has reached the age of 56 with nothing resembling the success of his two great literary heroes, George Orwell and Albert Camus. When he is offered the opportunity of a lifetime - to write the biography of the elusive Hamish Melville, a widely respected and highly influential activist and humanitarian - he seizes the chance to write something meaningful. His search to find out the real story behind the legend takes Mabbut to the lush landscapes and environmental hotspots of India.
The more he discovers about Melville, the more he admires him - and the more he connects with an idealist who wanted to make a difference. But is his quarry really who he claims to be? As Keith discovers, the truth can be whatever we make it.
In this wonderful, heartwarming novel, Michael Palin turns his considerable skills to fiction in the story of an ordinary man on an extraordinary adventure.
Members Reviews:
A well thought out and interesting story.
If you could sum up The Truth in three words, what would they be?
Very well done.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked how it had depth to the characters. Like a Camus novel the characters are well developed in a subtle manner but not overdone. The story is subtle enough that is sneaks up on you and before you know it you can't stop listening.
I like the fact that I thought I knew where it was going and the few twists and turns surprised me. I almost never write reviews but I feel strongly enough to explain why I would recommend it.
What does Alex Jennings bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
His narration was excellent. He was able to do a Scottish and Czechoslovakian accent and that added to the authenticity of the story.
If you could rename The Truth, what would you call it?
Mabbut's quest
