Dr. Michaela Bucchianeri, shares valuable insights and strategies for navigating the challenges of stepmotherhood.
Anxiety, Michaela reveals, serves a function by keeping us safe and prepared for the future. However, it can also hijack our strengths and manifest in negative ways such as rumination or excessive checking. The goal is to notice how anxiety hijacks our strengths and find ways to nurture and reclaim them.
Michaela discusses the different manifestations of anxiety, including diagnosable anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobias, OCD, and panic disorder. It is important to note that anxiety is a part of the spectrum of human experience, and everyone experiences it to some degree.
Disruption to daily life and two key factors, ambiguity and control, can contribute to anxiety. Ambiguity, particularly in the stepmom role, creates a moving target and lack of clarity, while control provides a sense of order, predictability, and security.
The concept of runaway worry is introduced, where anxiety can be triggered by certain situations such as the anticipation of the kids being dropped off at a stepmom's house.
Michaela explains that in these situations, a stepmom can choose to push through the anxiety, double down on worry, or avoid the problem altogether.
However, both of these alternatives can exacerbate the issue. Runaway worry not only affects the initial trigger but can also impact other areas of life and lead to anticipatory anxiety throughout the week.
