  • Living a Trigger-Free Life: Rewiring Your Emotional Brain – Dr. Brian DesRoches

What if the reason you can't change isn't a lack of willpower—but that your brain is protecting you from pain it once experienced?

Dr. Brian DesRoches has been in private practice as a psychotherapist since the late 1980s, integrating 21st-century neuroscience with proven interventions to help individuals develop internal resources, external skills, and greater emotional resilience . He holds a Master of Health Care Administration, a Master of Science in Counseling, a Master of Business Administration, and a Doctorate in Pastoral Counseling and Psychology . He has extensive training in EMDR, Brainspotting, Internal Family Systems, Coherence Therapy, and the therapeutic applications of modern neuroscience .

His newly published book, Living a Trigger-Free Life, grew out of a pivotal realization in 2015, when he saw that much of what he—and the field—believed about emotional healing was incomplete . That insight led him to the 21st-century neuroscience of emotional learning and memory reconsolidation, reshaping his understanding of how deep, enduring transformation occurs .

    In this episode, we explore:

🧠 The Paradigm Shift of 2015 — Brian shares the moment he realized that most of what he'd learned about helping people overcome emotional reactions was incomplete or even mistaken . He explains why traditional therapy and self-help approaches so often fail to create lasting transformation .

⚡ The "Mr. Nice Guy" Moment — Brian shares a vulnerable personal story about being "Mr. Nice Guy" in hospital administration, where he attended an assertiveness workshop, practiced in the mirror all weekend, and then completely froze when he actually faced his antagonist . He explains what was really happening in his brain in that moment and why all his preparation and willpower simply evaporated .

🔄 Explicit vs. Implicit Emotional Learnings — Brian makes a fascinating distinction between explicit traumatic memories that therapies like EMDR can treat and what he calls "implicit emotional learnings"—unconscious memories we don't even know we have but that control our behavior . He explains how these invisible emotional learnings get formed from everyday painful experiences .

🔮 The Feeling of What Will Happen — Brian describes a powerful internal sensation that feels absolutely true and commands our behavior even when we intellectually know it doesn't make sense . He shares the story of a dental client named Joan who would become overwhelmed with anxiety before presentations because her brain was convinced she'd be ridiculed, based on a single incident from sixth grade .

🧬 Memory Reconsolidation — Brian explains the critical discovery that emotional memories can actually be updated and even erased . He describes how this process challenges conventional therapy's focus on managing triggers and offers a five-step process that allows your brain to relearn what it once encoded as dangerous .

🏥 Challenging the Self-Help Industry — Brian challenges the entire foundation of the self-help industry, explaining that understanding and managing our emotional reactions rarely leads to enduring change . He shares why calming techniques do nothing to eliminate the actual trigger .

🧪 The Five-Step Process — Brian presents a five-step process for identifying and eliminating triggers . He explains that this isn't just another self-help formula—it's "self-informed, self-directed personal transformation" .

Brian's message is clear: 20th-century psychology focused on managing symptoms; 21st-century neuroscience offers actual transformation . His work empowers listeners to rewire their emotional responses and create a life of greater resilience and emotional well-being .

    This isn't motivation. It's methodology.

  • Why Toxic Relationships Don't Happen by Accident: Recognizing the Hidden System – Carine Van Hee

What if the confusion, shame, and exhaustion you feel in your relationship isn't your fault—but part of a hidden system you were never taught to recognize?

Carine Van Hee knows this question intimately. She's a visual artist, survivor of mental abuse, and author of the book "Is It Me? The Hidden System Behind Toxic Relationships" . Her work is built on a powerful insight: toxic relationships don't happen by accident; they follow a predictable, hidden system that shapes how people behave, respond, and remain trapped .

What she missed most when experiencing abusive relationships herself was a role model, someone she could turn to and ask: "Is this normal? Do you recognize this?" That space between doubting and reaching out for help felt like a void . That is why she decided to write her book—to combine lived experience with short, accessible theories that make complex psychological concepts easy to understand .

Today, she's an artist, author, and speaker who uses her personal story and creative work to raise awareness about emotional manipulation . Through her talks, art, and writing, she inspires people to choose relationships built on respect, honesty, and emotional freedom . She's also one of the Voices for the Family Justice Center Alliance in Europe (EFJCA) .

    In this episode, we explore:

🎭 Why Toxic Relationships Don't Happen by Accident — Carine explains how abusive relationships follow a predictable system and why understanding this system is the first step toward healing . She describes how a toxic relationship starts with "spotting" and the grooming process that makes it so hard to recognize .

🔍 The Difference Between Conflict and Abuse — Carine distinguishes between normal relationship conflict and systemic abuse . She explains why survivors often can't explain what happened to them and why that confusion is a symptom, not a sign of weakness .

💔 Why It's So Hard to Leave — Carine addresses one of the most common questions: why leaving a toxic relationship can feel freeing but may lead to the toughest times . She explores the psychological and practical barriers to leaving and what survivors need to know before they go .

🧠 How Toxic Relationships Affect Your Body and Mind — Carine discusses the physical and psychological impact of toxic relationships . She explains how emotional abuse affects your nervous system, self-worth, and ability to trust yourself .

🛡️ How Not to Take the Toxic Bat — Carine shares two strategies that can help survivors avoid absorbing the toxicity of their abuser . She explains how to recognize when you're taking on their shame, blame, or projection—and how to stop .

💬 How to Be a Supportive Friend or Family Member — Carine offers practical advice for loved ones who want to support someone in a toxic relationship . She shares what to say, what not to say, and how to avoid unintentionally adding to the survivor's burden .

💪 Why Self-Care Is Absolutely Crucial After Abuse — Carine explains why self-care isn't selfish—it's essential . She shares how she used art and creativity to reconnect with herself, express the unknown, and embrace all emotions along the way .

🎨 Art and Healing — Carine discusses how creativity helped her heal and how art can be a powerful tool for processing trauma and reconnecting with yourself .

Carine's message is clear: you are not alone, it's not your fault, and you can heal . She offers hope and practical tools for anyone who feels confused, ashamed, tired, or isolated in their relationships .

What happens when you ride a tandem bicycle across America with your spouse—and you're still healing from an emotionally abusive marriage?

Teri M Brown knows this journey intimately. Born in Athens, Greece as an Air Force brat, she came into the world with an imagination full of stories to tell . She graduated from UNC Greensboro with multiple degrees—Elementary Education, Psychology, Math, and Sociology—because she just couldn't settle on one thing .

But it was in 2017, after finally getting out of a 14-year emotionally abusive marriage, that Teri began writing fiction—a lifelong dream. Upon winning the First Annual Anita Bloom Ornoff Award for Inspirational Short Story, she began writing in earnest .

Her debut novel, Sunflowers Beneath the Snow (2022), a historical fiction set in Ukraine, launched just three weeks before the current Ukrainian crisis and has won 12 awards . Her second novel, An Enemy Like Me (2023), a WWII historical fiction, has won 27 awards . Her third novel, Daughters of Green Mountain Gap (2024), a generational story about Appalachian healers, won the North Carolina Humanities 2026 Reads Selection .

Then came the adventure that changed everything. In 2020, Teri and her late husband Bruce rode a tandem bicycle over 3,102 miles across the United States—from Astoria, Oregon to Washington, DC—successfully raising money for Toys for Tots . This journey became the inspiration for 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure (2025), an inspirational book about the life lessons she learned on the road .

And her newest work, Peg, Unhinged (April 2026), is a humorous contemporary women's fiction about menopause—a topic she chose because "like menopause, abuse is something many women don't discuss. I always try to shine a light on topics I feel are somewhat taboo or swept under the rug" .

    In this episode, we explore:

Teri's message is honest and hopeful: Life isn't over at 50 or 60 or 70 or even 100. Every woman has the potential to live life to her fullest each and every day . She believes in mentoring others—especially youth and women who are having trouble discovering their worth .
