Science class, high school, me braiding my friend's hair, when my teacher says: "You can drop out right now and become a hairdresser. Is that what you want?"

The interaction lasted 2 seconds, but the impact has been lingering for over a decade.

It made me believe that certain jobs are more valuable than others. It made me think I don't belong in a science environment. And it made me believe that this man dictated my future - he needed to like me.

My reaction was angry and defiant. "I'll show you." was my teenage mantra.

What happened next was the start of a misaligned career path. I became an engineer even though I hated math & science. I only felt worthy when I was validated by a man. I operated from a space of teenage anger and fear to prove myself.

It took digging and soul-searching to realize that the teenager in me was making my career choices. She tried her best, but she was only a girl. I needed mature, present-day-me to step in and take over.
